Prime Video announced the official release date and delivered a sneak peek image of Gael García Bernal as a gay wrestler.
Gael García Bernal, who recently starred alongside Jennifer Lopez in The Mother, is gearing up for his next role. In the Roger Ross Williams-directed film Cassandro, Bernal plays Saúl Armendáriz, a gay amateur wrestler from El Paso who creates the character Cassandro, the “Liberace of Lucha Libre.” The film is an adaptation of a true story written by Ross Williams and David Teague.
The film also stars Joaquín Cosío and Raúl Castillo, El Hijo del Santo, and Benito Antonio Martínez Ocasio (Bad Bunny).

In honor of Pride month, Williams also shared a special message, telling audiences the beautiful meaning behind the film.
“This story tells the journey of the iconic queer luchador who fights for acceptance inside and outside of the ring. Like Pride,” he continues, “becoming a lucha libre exotico is more than just costume and makeup. It is about proudly embracing who you are. This Pride season I am here to celebrate your truest most beautiful self.”
Bad Bunny notably will play one of Armendáriz’s lovers and previously reflected on his experience on set. “My first kiss for a movie and it was with a man,” he told Time Magazine. “That’s the penalty I get for being with so many women during my life.”
Jokes aside, Bad Bunny said he was ready to play a queer character and did not take his time on set for granted.
“If you’re acting, you’re being someone you’re not,” he continued. “So when they asked me for that, I said, ‘Yes, I’m here for whatever you want.’ I think it was very cool; I didn’t feel uncomfortable.”
Cassandro will play in select theaters beginning on September 15 and will be available to stream on Prime Video on September 22.
