KL627 in Economy & KL628 in World Business Class
Flying with KLM Royal Dutch Airlines for our trip to the Pride of the Americas was a delightful experience. As a gay couple, we were pleasantly surprised with the inclusive and luxurious atmosphere on board again. We flew economy class on KL627 from Amsterdam to Miami and business class on KL628 from Miami to Amsterdam. Sky Team member KLM is our partner airline for our gay couple travel blog. However, we always aim to ensure that all our reviews are based on actual events, our experiences on board, and our opinions and are not affected by complimentary use or payments.
7 good reasons why KLM Royal Dutch Airlines is gay-friendly
For the past few years, we’ve been traveling worldwide with KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, our Amsterdam-based partner airline. Therefore, we take a closer look at Sky Team member KLM and introduce you to the LGBTQ+ friendly side of this Dutch airline to answer the question: How gay-friendly is KLM Royal Dutch Airlines?
Boarding Process with KLM Royal Dutch Airlines
Boarding at Amsterdam Schiphol is organized by Zones. Depending on your Flying Blue status, your miles, and your flight class, the zone is clearly stated on a ticket. That sometimes means Economy Comfort passengers will board together with Economy only because of their status. Our flight was not full. This meant we would not have to worry about insufficient space in the overhead lockers. On our return flight, however, there was a separate Sky Priority line for business class passengers to board the flight first. The Sky Priority line allowed us to bypass the long queue, and we could board the flight without any hassle via the separate gangway entrance to the business.
Seating in KLM Economy vs. Business Class
The seating in the economy class on KL627 from Amsterdam to Miami was comfortable. Our seats were located right behind Economy Comfort as double seats by the window. Therefore, we had enough legroom to stretch out during the 9-hour flight. We also appreciated the adjustable headrests, which made it easier to sleep.
Nevertheless, the seats in business class on KL628 were much more luxurious. The seats were spacious, fully reclined, and had built-in massage functions. We could actually lay down and sleep with the provided individual pillows and blankets.

Meals in Economy Class and World Business Class
KLM Royal Dutch Airlines offers various meals and refreshments to cater to different dietary requirements. Daan as a vegetarian was pleased with the vegetarian meal option available for both flights. The food served in Economy Class on KL627 was delicious, and we were impressed by the quality of the meal. We also received a complimentary Prosecco from KLM’s World Business Class, which was a nice touch – and of course, a special gesture from the flight crew.
In business class on KL628, we were served a three-course meal, which was fantastic. We had a menu in our seat pockets when we entered the plane. The chosen meal was served on fine china, and we were given a choice of wines, beers, and non-alcoholic beverages to complement our meal.
In-flight Entertainment: Amsterdam to Miami & back
The in-flight entertainment system on both flights was great. In Economy Class on KLM flight KL627, we had a wide range of movies, TV shows, and music to pick from. We could watch the latest blockbuster movies with good sound and video quality. KLM provided free In-Ear-Headphones and a small adapter for the external use of individual headphones for passengers.
In World Business Class, on KLM flight KL628 from Miami to Amsterdam, though, we had a much larger screen and a more extensive selection of content. But the particular, luxurious part of the in-flight entertainment was the provided noise-canceling headphones to enhance our in-flight entertainment experience. Additionally, noise-canceling headphones provide a much calmer, quieter environment on the plane.
KLM from Amsterdam to Miami: Special Amenities
Besides the headphones, pillows, and blankets, passengers on Economy Class flights receive free drinks, water bottles, food, snacks, and wrapped refreshing and disinfecting towels. In World Business Class, on the other hand, we were offered several special amenities that made our flight even more enjoyable. We were provided with amenity kits designed by Jan Taminiau, a well-known Dutch fashion designer, that included skincare products, toothbrushes, and socks (no slippers, though). After the main course, we could choose from a selection of different kinds of Chocolates inspired by Dutch houses. The flight attendants were attentive and provided us with a hot towel before takeoff and after the meal service.
And while we got ready for the landing procedure to arrive at Amsterdam’s airport Schiphol, one of the friendly flight attendants approached us with a selection of miniature Delft Blue houses, filled with Dutch gin. These unique gifts have been around since the 1950s and, over time, have become true collector’s items. Over the years, we’ve collected about 20 of the appealing little designer items that are standing in a vitrine in our living room. When do you get the miniature KLM houses? Passengers receive one of the porcelain miniatures when traveling in World Business Class on an intercontinental route.
Tips for your travels to Florida with KLM
Florida is a great destination for LGBTQ+ travelers, with several cities offering a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere. Miami is a vibrant city known for its beaches, nightlife, and diverse culture. South Beach is a popular LGBTQ+ hotspot with numerous gay bars and clubs. Wilton Manors and Fort Lauderdale is another popular destination known for its gay beach, Sebastian Street Beach. Key West in the Florida Keys, located at the southernmost point in the continental United States, is a laid-back island known for its colorful houses and friendly locals. For travelers looking to visit Orlando from Miami, there are various options, including flying, taking a train, or renting a car for the 3-hour drive.
Advice for taking photos on board
Gay-friendly KLM Royal Dutch Airlines prohibits passengers from taking unsolicited photos and videos of other travelers and staff. This is specifically announced shortly after being greeted by the crew. Of course, we adhered to this rule throughout the flight. Furthermore, we informed other passengers sitting close to us that we would take photos and videos for our blog and social media during the flights from Amsterdam to Miami and back. Even though other airlines have not (yet) made these rules official, we would also like to ask you to be considerate of each traveler’s privacy rights to ensure a peaceful beginning or end of each vacationer’s trip.
