Grindr wants Congress to make it easier to make a baby. The gay hookup app, which has bulked up its lobbying muscle in Washington this year, is setting its sights on an unexpected legislative priority: family formation. It’s pushing lawmakers to take steps to make IVF and surrogacy less expensive — and has an unlikely ally on Capitol Hill.
“Being involved in making this possible matters a lot for our users,” Grindr CEO George Arison told Playbook. “But I also think it’s critical to realize that making surrogacy and fertility care more accessible to people benefits all Americans, regardless of whether they’re gay or straight.”
Enter the dads. When Arison met Sen. John Hickenlooper (D-Colo.) earlier this year, he “made a comment about my son, and it just hit a nerve,” Hickenlooper told Playbook. Both men have welcomed children via surrogate, Hickenlooper in 2022 and Arison in 2019.
The two teamed up last month to write an op-ed calling on Congress and the White House to make fertility-related expenses fully tax-deductible, update federal insurance rules to cover surrogacy and adopt a broader definition of infertility that would apply to same-sex couples.
