A recent tweet from Secretary of Defense “War” Pete Hegseth has prompted widespread mockery online.
On Friday evening, he posted a braggadocious tweet about the names of recent US military operations.
“OPERATION ROUGH RIDER = Freedom of Navigation for U.S. ships,” he began.
“OPERATION MIDNIGHT HAMMER = Obliteration of Iranian nuclear sites.”

And finally: “OPERATION SOUTHERN SPEAR = Destroy Narco-Terrorists killing Americans.”
Hegseth said the President “means business — and the world knows it. Peace Through Strength.”
The operations in question, particulary Southern Spear, have divided opinion along moral and legal lines. However, it was Hegseth’s boasting of the names that caught attention on this occasion. Many thought the same thing: “Rough Rider,” “Midnight Hammer,” and “Southern Spear” all sound like either gay strippers or adult entertainment titles or both.

Others mocked Hegseth for leading the push to change the name of the Department of Defense to the Department of War: a move that a recent report said could cost up to $2 billion due to the volume of signage that would need to be changed and the rewriting of digital code.

Hegseth announced on Thursday the formation of “Operation Southern Spear” to target “narco-terrorists” illegally shipping drugs to the US.
The military has now conducted around 20 attacks on small boats in the Caribbean Sea in recent months, resulting in the deaths of at least 80 people. Some lawmakers have questioned the legality of such lethal strikes.
According to The Hill, the term “Southern Spear” is not new, despite Hegseth appearing to “announce” it on Thursday.
Back in January, the military issued a statement saying that the U.S. Navy’s 4th Fleet would start a new operation, named “Southern Spear,” that will “operationalize a heterogeneous mix of Robotic and Autonomous Systems (RAS) to support the detection and monitoring of illicit” smuggling.
It’s unclear how Hegseth’s Thursday announcement is related to the one made by the military in January.
