Republicans serve up more homophobic slop with “Nuclear Family Month” declarations

"Nuclear Family Month" is the epitome of homophobic pandering.

For the last decade, Republicans have sold their souls to a vulgar, thrice-married charlatan who’s been found liable for sexual abuse. Yet, they still try to stake out the moral high ground. But there’s a problem with that…

Nobody is buying it!

Every June, conservatives bust out their most histrionic displays of righteous indignation. They whine and complain as LGBTQ+ people celebrate Pride Month, and generally come across as disingenuous dweebs.

On Monday, Indiana Governor Mike Braun reached a new low in conservative pandering with his declaration of “Nuclear Family Month.” The first line of his executive order claims the “nuclear family, consisting of one husband, one wife, and any biological, adopted, or fostered children, is God’s design for the family structure and has been the foundation of society since the creation of the world.”

Of course, that is completely false

In designating the “nuclear family” as a husband, wife and kids, Braun stiffs single parents across the state. In the statement’s second paragraph, the right-wing pol takes his exclusion one step further.

The proclamation states that children living with their biological parents exhibit superior “physical and mental well-being.” Of course, no evidence or context is provided for the claim. It probably is true that children who live with their biological parents experience better outcomes on average. But research overwhelmingly shows that socioeconomic status is the greatest indicator of a child’s long-term success.

Along similar lines, decades of research has found that children raised in same-sex households perform just as well as those with straight parents. The argument can even be made that gay parents are typically more prepared to raise kids: the process is more intentional, never mind expensive.

But forget the fact that Braun wouldn’t pass an intro level college course. He’s just the latest Republican governor to try and usurp Pride Month with an absurd declaration tailor-made for Fox News boomers. We’ll call it “homophobic slop.”

Earlier this spring, Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee signed a resolution declaring June “Nuclear Family Month” in the Southern state. Tennessee resident Riley Gaines commemorated the occasion on X, and promptly received a social media swirly.

“This is cringey AF,” posted one keen observer.

Others were just as forthcoming with their disgust.

Leftist commentator Matt Bernstein pointed out the irony of Gaines dumping on Pride Month, considering the second-rate college swimmer owes her entire career to losing to a transgender person.

To kick off Pride Month, homophobes are once again throwing hissy fits over sports teams recognizing their LGBTQ+ fans.

Even for the GOP, “Nuclear Family Month” is especially pathetic. Tennessee Rep. Andy Ogles wished his followers a “Happy Nuclear Family Month” on Tuesday, and added that homosexuality has “no place in America.”

One wonders how gay Tr*mp admin officials, like Treasury Sec. Scott Bessent, feel about that claim.

While Tr*mp’s LGBTQ+ outreach was always insincere, it’s astounding to think that his campaign actually held Pride events in 2016. Famously, he also said that Caitlyn Jenner would be welcome to use whichever bathroom she wants in Tr*mp Tower.

An old New York queen who marvels over “handsome men,” Tr*mp is a strange leader for a conservative, religious movement. One could say that religious conservatism has always been performative. But Tr*mp rips the mask off.

As inflation skyrockets, families of all stripes are struggling. Want to know what hurts nuclear families more than a gay couple down the street?

Gas that’s $5 per galloon.
