The McCaffrey brothers swapping jerseys continues a sports tradition we all love

Christian and Luke McCaffrey exchanged jerseys after their first NFL game against each other, a positive reminder of the longstanding tradition.

Christian McCaffrey and his brother, Luke, got to play against each other in the NFL for the first time in their careers on Monday Night Football. Christian’s San Francisco 49ers defeated Luke’s Washington Commanders 23-17 to advance to 6-0 on the season.

After the game, the brothers got together for a post-game jersey swap. It must have been a full-circle moment for them, but the jersey swap isn’t just for the players doing it. It’s one of the coolest traditions in sports for fans to watch, as well.

Especially in male sports, players showing affection beyond a high-five or a brief embrace can sometimes be a mixed bag. Athletes giving each other their jerseys after a game is a simple yet strong expression of masculinity that we strongly approve of.

The jersey swap can take many different forms.

Legends like Dirk Nowitzki and Dwyane Wade swapped jerseys in their retirement seasons. They came together to appreciate each other and what they had both done in their careers. It was also a major nostalgic moment for fans from the 2000s and 2010s who loved watching both of them play. It served as a truce of sorts for both men, as they had a disagreement during the 2011 NBA Finals when Wade and LeBron James made fun of an illness that Nowitzki was suffering from throughout the series.

Sometimes the jersey swap can be silly and immature. Boys will be boys, right? When Gradey Dick and Anthony Black, role players on the Toronto Raptors and Orlando Magic, played against each other in 2024, they took a moment to revel in some gutter laughs with an arranged swap that everyone with a good middle school sense of humor got a kick out of.

But that’s the beauty of the jersey swap. It’s a versatile and diverse representation of men recognizing each other, whether it’s between family members, legends, or strangers who just want engagement online. We hope it continues.
