Shabana Azeez is stepping into a heartfelt new queer romance.

The Pitt star has been cast in Unrequited, an independent feature that marks the directorial debut of filmmaker Lynn Q. Yu. Based on an original screenplay by Yu, the film follows two former college roommates and lovers as they embark on one last road trip across California before one of them leaves the United States for good.

Azeez will play Anjali, who plans to return home to India. Before she leaves, her best friend and former partner, Trish, convinces her to take a farewell journey exploring California’s diverse food scene while trying to persuade her to stay.

The film is expected to begin production in California next spring. A Different Side of Shabana Azeez

Yu told Deadline that Azeez was the perfect fit for the role and teased that audiences will see a completely different side of the rising actor.

“Shabana is a tremendous talent. We’re so thrilled to be working with such an exciting actor of her generation, someone who really embodies the ethos and spirit of the script,” Yu said. “Audiences are going to get to see Shabana in a way they haven’t seen her before, in a role that is by turns funny and sexy and charming as hell.”

Producers include Jake Casey and Danielle Benedict of The Dazey Phase, alongside John Gray of It’s Not Pork. Rich Freeman and Rick Berg will executive produce for Code Entertainment. From ‘The Pitt’ to the Big Screen

Azeez is best known for playing Dr. Victoria Javadi on HBO‘s acclaimed medical drama The Pitt, set inside the emergency department of the fictional Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center. Still, this is not her first queer role.

She also voiced Saira in the animated queer comedy Lesbian Space Princess. The film follows a sheltered space princess who embarks on a galaxy-spanning adventure to save her bounty hunter ex-girlfriend from the Straight White Maliens. Azeez has also appeared opposite Sarah Snook in Netflix’s Run Rabbit Run and will next star in the Australian drama The Airport Chaplain.
