Tig Notaro on finally getting to tell Tom Cruise they look alike: “I’m the DIY lesbian version”

I’ve been told for years that people feel like I look like Tom Cruise.

I’ve never been in a room with Tom Cruise and he got off the stage (at The Governors Awards) and he was mingling with everybody else.

I was there with the producer of [the Andrea Gibson documentary] ‘Come See Me in the Good Light’ and I was like ‘I’m beelining for Tom Cruise and I’m going to meet him.’ 

My wife [Stephanie Allynne] has always thought he was really cute and I always told her she married the DIY lesbian version.

I beeline through all the security, all the reps…I get up to Tom’s agent …and I said, “Could I meet Tom? I just want to show him a picture. Everyone tells me I look like him.”

And she [Cruise’s agent] was so formal and she says, “Tom. Comedian Tig Notaro!” and the crowd parts.

I walk in and I got to show him this picture and said, ‘Listen, if you ever need someone to play your gay sister…’
