Two Charged With Hate Crimes In CA Anti-Gay Assault

San Jose’s ABC affiliate reports:

Two men have been charged with felony assault and hate crime enhancements in connection with an attack on a San Jose State University student, according to prosecutors. A 19-year-old from Sunnyvale and a 20-year-old from Fremont appeared in court Wednesday. The defendants did not enter pleas and are being held without bail.

According to the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office, the incident occurred early Saturday morning around 3:45 a.m. on the San Jose State campus. Prosecutors allege the victim and two female friends were walking on campus when the suspects approached them, asked the student whether he was gay and shouted anti-gay slurs.

When the group attempted to walk away, prosecutors say the suspects attacked the student, punching and kicking him. One of the female friends was also assaulted when she tried to intervene. Investigators say the attack was captured on security video.
