The neon lights might be bright on Broadway, but Midtown Manhattan isn’t the only place for glitz and glam among New York City performance venues.

New arts venues and performance spaces have recently emerged beyond the theater district, adding more distinctive choices of live entertainment for culture-hungry locals and visitors.

GayCities hit the pavement to check out these newcomers and spotlight some of their queercentric offerings.

Musical theater fans are scratching impatiently for their new, reimagined, immersive production of the Andrew Lloyd Webber classic Cats. The new version slinks its way onto the stage in June, drawing inspiration from New York’s ballroom culture of the ‘70s and ‘80s.

Also in June:  PAC’s Criminal Queerness Festival, a theater event that “celebrates queer and trans artists from around the world who have the guts to risk it all.”

Legendary performers like Joan Rivers, Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, and Alexandra Billings got their start at Chicago’s famous comedy theater, which dates back to 1959.

Detroit, Toronto, and Hollywood companies would follow, each producing world-famous talent. Soon, The Second City‘s sketchy shenanigans will have a home in Williamsburg and one of the newest New York City performance venues.

The Second City also boasts an impressive roster of LGBTQ+ alumni, including Tien Train, E.R. Fightmaster, Shantira Jackson, and John Hartman.

Although specific programming is yet to be announced for the NYC outpost, it’s sure to have some queer sensibility with artistic director Alan Kliffer and music director Jeff Bouthiette at the helm. The opening is scheduled for January 2024.
