The Telegraph reports:
A Christian actress who was sacked from a stage show of The Color Purple over homophobic comments has lost a five-year discrimination case. Seyi Omooba, 29, was dropped from the role of lesbian character Celie in a 2019 production of the play in a row over a social media post.
She took the theatre and her former agents to an employment tribunal, claiming that she was the victim of religious discrimination. However, her case was thrown out after she admitted that she had not read the script before accepting the lead role.
She claimed she did not know realise the character was gay and would not have gone through with appearing in the play if she had. The actress appealed the tribunal’s decision, including its ruling that she must pay more than £300,000 in legal costs.
The Christian Post reports:
The judge said Omooba “knew she would not play a lesbian character, but had not raised this with the theatre, or sought to inform herself as to the requirements of the role of Celie,” The Sunday Times reported.
She was familiar with the film adaptation of “The Color Purple,” based on Alice Walker’s prize-winning novel that was to be staged in Birmingham and Leicester, England, and which downplayed the lesbian relationship central to the story, but she failed to grasp the stage version’s focus on this aspect.
Omooba had urged Christians to “tell the truth” about homosexuality, writing: “It is clearly evident in 1 Corinthians 6:9-11 what the Bible says on this matter. I do not believe you can be born gay and I do not believe homosexuality is right.”
Omooba’s case was argued by the British anti-LGBTQ hate group Christian Concern, whose 2020 video on the lawsuit is below. As of today, £300,000 comes out to $382,000.
