Beyonce pays tribute to O’Shae Sibley

Beyoncé posted a tribute on her website to O’Shae Sibley, a 28 year-old gay black man who was stabbed to death after dancing at a gas station in Brooklyn on July 29. The tribute read “Rest in Power O’Shae Sibley.”

It was widely reported that Sibley was listening to Beyoncé at the time of the fatal stabbing.

The man who approached Sibley allegedly made homophobic comments as Sibley was voguing and listening to music with his friends at the Mobil gas station at 1921 Coney Island Avenue in the Midwood section of Brooklyn. Sibley and his friends were on their way back from a day at the beach when they stopped at the gas station.

Sibley was pronounced dead after being brought to Maimonides Medical Center.

Vigils have been forming as the community prepares to remember Sibley. A memorial ball slated to take place on August 4 at 6 p.m. at the Mobil Gas Station where Sibley died. A GoFundMe page to raise money for the funeral has generated $49,520 as of the morning of August 3.

No arrests have been made, but the NYPD is investigating the crime as a hate crime.
