Drag Race star Jinkx Monsoon wants to put her “stamp” on this iconic musical role

Jinkx Monsoon has revealed her dream musical role in a new interview.

Over the last decade, the beloved performer has captivated fans worldwide with her incredible talent.

From winning RuPaul’s Drag Race twice—including the franchise’s first-ever winners’ season of All Stars—to becoming the first drag queen to perform in a major Broadway musical, Jinkx hasn’t left a stone unturned.

With her career showing no signs of slowing down, the Seattle-based queen recently opened up to Paper Magazine about her journey, revealing that performing has always been her destiny.

“I can’t remember that far back. It’s just always been known. I came out of my mother queer and a performer. Ask anyone in my family. It’s in my baby book as one of my first sentences,” she explained.

In addition to her past, Jinkx opened up about her future aspirations, including the musical role she would love to play.

“It has always been Mrs Lovett in Sweeney Todd. While I would never say no to playing her in the current running revival production, but I feel like in order to have this dream fulfilled, I’d want to originate a performance of her,” she revealed.

“I gotta say, I love taking over roles – it’s a really fun and unique challenge as an actor! I just feel ready to put my stamp on a character before anyone else does.”

While we’ll have to wait to see if Jinkx will join the Sweeney Todd family, she has proven in the past that she can conquer any role.

In January 2023, she received universal acclaim for portraying Mama Morton in the iconic Chicago musical on Broadway. Her performance was so successful that Jinkx extended her run for 14 additional performances.

According to Playbill, she’s also expected to reprise the role this summer, between 27 June and 12 July.

Alongside her stage feats, Jinkx has made her mark in the TV sphere, with her recent Doctor Who appearance as the villainous Maestro earning rave reviews from critics and fans.

When discussing her role with Entertainment Weekly, the 36-year-old entertainer revealed that she was inspired by past Doctor Who villains, like Michelle Gomez’s performance as Missy.

“She’s incredible at playing these sinister characters who are so nuanced and so complex,” she continued.

“You see what’s going on inside the character, even though there’s this veneer of unfazed evil. So yeah, Michelle Gomez, big shoutout to her.”

Here’s to hoping Jinkx can add Mrs Lovett to her growing acting resume.
