Hacks fans rejoice! Max has dropped a new sneak peek into season three.
Spoilers ahead.
Back in June 2022, fans breathed a collective sigh of relief when the hit LGBTQIA+ comedy was greenlit for a third season.
The hit show follows the volatile professional and personal relationship between Gen Z writer Ava Daniels (Hannah Einbinder) and legendary Las Vegas comedian Deborah Vance (Jean Smart).
“We’re thrilled that our HBO Max partners have renewed this standout series for a third season, and we can’t wait to see what’s next for Deborah, Avan and the rest of our outstanding ensemble,” Erin Underhill, the President of Universal, said in a statement.
Over the last year and a half, the popular streamer has remained mum on details regarding the highly anticipated new episodes… until now.
On 1 March, Max surprised fans with a brand new teaser trailer for season three, which is set to return with a two-episode premiere on 2 May.
At the start of the teaser, we see the “Queen of Vegas” (Smart) in all her glory strutting inside a glitzy casino before the clip transitions to an elevator slowly closing.
However, before the doors could shut, Ava rushes inside the platform, resulting in an unexpected reunion with Deborah – who fired her in the season two finale.
The trailer then ushers in the inspirational sounds of Elton John’s ‘I’m Still Standing,’ while comedic clips of the two characters and the rest of the Hacks gang flash across the screen.
Towards the end of the teaser, Ava attempts to warn Deborah that her revitalised career may be derailed due to some of her past jokes resurfacing.
“Some of the more problematic material, it’s gaining traction,” Ava says, which results in an annoyed Deborah hilariously saying more problematic things.
In addition to dropping the exciting teaser, the creators of Hacks, Jen Stasky, Lucia Aniello and Paul W. Downs, shared new details about season three during an interview with Vanity Fair.
When discussing how Ava and Deborah will reunite at the start of the season, Aniello teased, “We try to bring them together in a way that deepens their relationship. It’s a truce, you could say. They’ve made up in a way that becomes another yarn in the tapestry of their relationship.”
While the new episodes will feature a deeper look at their relationship, they will also shine a light on Ava and Deborah’s toxic co-dependency, which will result in them struggling to establish and uphold their respective boundaries.
“It’s something we talked a lot about as we wrote this season – their power dynamic, which is at the heart of the show,” Statsky explained.
“And as they grow closer, the boundaries become blurred, and it becomes a question of, ‘What is this? It’s a boss-employee relationship, but it’s also a deep love and friendship.’ We’re exploring how complicated that can be this season.”
Hacks season three will see the return of Downs, Megan Stalter, Carl Clemons-Hopkins, Kaitlin Olson, Christopher McDonald, Mark Indelicato, Poppy Liu, Rose Abdoo, Angela Elayne Gibbs, Lorenza Izzo,
The new season will also feature a sleuth of A-list guest stars, including Oscar-winner Helen Hunt, Back to the Future star Christopher Lloyd and Scandal actor Tony Goldwyn.
