LGBTQ+ Art, Culture on Display Down Under at Sydney WorldPride 2023

Powerhouse Museum and Sydney WorldPride 2023Sydney WorldPride 2023 has drawn to a close, but the two-week celebration and local LGBTQ+ community proved Pride is about more than a kiki party and a fabulous costume – although there were plenty of fabulous costumes and more at the Powerhouse Museum in Sydney in conjunction with Sydney WorldPride.Highlighting the display at the magnificent space in Sydney, however, was the photographic series Paradise Camp by Yuri Kihara. In Paradise Camp, Kihara, who identifies as Sāmoa’s third gender known as fa’afafine, gave a fa’afafine perspective to French Postimpressionist painter Paul Gaugin’s work to disrupt the idealized concept of French Polynesia he portrayed in his paintings rather than the reality of the island and its people and culture. Also on display at the Powerhouse Museum as part of Sydney WorldPride 2023 was Absolutely Queer which showcased the costuming and other creations of the local LGBTQ+ community.Powerhouse Museum also presented Unpopular, which featured previously unseen archival footage and artifacts of music entrepreneur Stephen ‘Pav’ Pavlovic. Launched in 1995, Pavlovic’s Summersault music festivals introduced Australian audiences in five cities to underground rock and punk legends like Beastie Boys, Sonic Youth, Beck, Foo Fighter, Rancid, and more. The exhibit included the guitar used by Kurt Cobain during a performance on MTV’s Unplugged in 1993.Finally, iconic Australian fashion designer Carla Zampatti was featured in Zampatti Powerhouse, which showcased the extensive collection of the Italian-born designer who became a legend in her adopted country. The exhibit included Zampatti’s famed customized cherry red Ford Lancer.Keep scrolling to see our fave curated pics from the exhibits at the Powerhouse Museum as part of Sydney WorldPride 2023.You can learn more at Sydney.com or Instagram and Facebook @sydney #feelnewsydneyRELATED: 25 Nicely Naughty Pics from the Bondi Beach Party at Sydney WorldPride 2023Sexy Galexy performance costumes in Absolutely QueerYou can learn more at Sydney.com or Instagram and Facebook @sydney #feelnewsydneyMardi Gras costumes by Renè Rivas in Absolutely QueerYou can learn more at Sydney.com or Instagram and Facebook @sydney #feelnewsydneyNorrie’s bubble bike and biographical film in Absolutely QueerYou can learn more at Sydney.com or Instagram and Facebook @sydney #feelnewsydneyRon Muncaster ‘Cotton Blossom’ (1994) in Absolutely QueerYou can learn more at Sydney.com or Instagram and Facebook @sydney #feelnewsydneyThree Fa‘afafine (After Gauguin), 2020 by Yuki Kihara from Paradise Camp seriesYou can learn more at Sydney.com or Instagram and Facebook @sydney #feelnewsydneySi‘ou alofa Maria: Hail Mary (After Gauguin), 2020 by Yuki Kihara from Paradise Camp seriesYou can learn more at Sydney.com or Instagram and Facebook @sydney #feelnewsydneyTwo Fa‘afafine on the beach (After Gauguin), 2020 by Yuki Kihara from Paradise Camp seriesYou can learn more at Sydney.com or Instagram and Facebook @sydney #feelnewsydneyBoundless Drop, To A Boundless Ocean Directed and edited by Julian Klincewiczusing 16mm archival footage of the Summersault festival, filmed by Evan Bernard, 1995/1996You can learn more at Sydney.com or Instagram and Facebook @sydney #feelnewsydney1959 Martin D-18E was played by Kurt Cobain during Nirvana's MTVUnplugged in NewYork, 1993You can learn more at Sydney.com or Instagram and Facebook @sydney #feelnewsydneyThe works of Australian fashion designer Carla Zampatti in Zampatti PowerhouseYou can learn more at Sydney.com or Instagram and Facebook @sydney #feelnewsydney'Graphic group’ from Carla Zampatti in Zampatti PowerhouseYou can learn more at Sydney.com or Instagram and Facebook @sydney #feelnewsydney'Graphic group’ from Carla Zampatti in Zampatti PowerhouseYou can learn more at Sydney.com or Instagram and Facebook @sydney #feelnewsydney‘Black, Red and Cream’ and ‘Jumpsuit’ in Zampatti Powerhouse. You can learn more at Sydney.com or Instagram and Facebook @sydney #feelnewsydney‘Animal’ group with close-up of beaded ‘Carla’ cape in Zampatti PowerhouseYou can learn more at Sydney.com or Instagram and Facebook @sydney #feelnewsydneyView of ‘Princess’ and ‘Carla’ wardrobe groups in Zampatti PowerhouseYou can learn more at Sydney.com or Instagram and Facebook @sydney #feelnewsydney
