Miami Venue Fined $5K For 2022 Xmas Drag Show

Miami’s ABC affiliate reports:

State regulators and the Hyatt Regency Miami have reached a settlement in a dispute about minors attending an event last year titled “A Drag Show Christmas.” Regulators threatened to revoke the hotel’s liquor license, and the dispute helped lead to the Legislature passing a law this spring aimed at preventing minors from attending drag shows.

Under the settlement, known as a consent order, the hotel agreed to pay a $5,000 fine and to prevent minors from attending performances at a facility known as the James L. Knight Center if such a performance “contains, depicts or simulates” activities targeted in the new law. The consent order said the hotel “admits no liability by settling” the dispute.

NBC News reports:

Lawmakers in over a dozen states have introduced laws intended to restrict drag performances. Six of those states, including Florida, passed their versions of the laws. However, many of these new laws have been struck down or blocked by courts.

Just last month, the Supreme Court rejected Florida’s request to enforce its drag law after a lower court blocked the measure statewide. A district judge in June found the Florida law to be “specifically designed to suppress the speech of drag queen performers.”

Florida’s settlement with the Hyatt Regency Miami follows similar settlements the state made in recent months with a Miami restaurant and an Orlando nonprofit for hosting drag shows last year.

The James L. Knight Center is a major venue and has hosted Miss Universe and Miss USA pageants. The main room seats 4600.

As I reported in March 2023 when DeSantis moved to yank the venue’s liquor license, the show required people under 18 to be accompanied by an adult as a condition of being allowed to attend.

But as always, the “parents rights” crowd only believes in the rights of Christian parents and not the rights of parents who want to bring their kids to drag shows.
