Country star Miranda Lambert has just released a new album entitled Crisco. She spoke to Rolling Stone this week about her latest work and why she threw a “Crisco Disco Drag Brunch” in Nashville to celebrate the album’s arrival.

Her answer has drawn praise online.

“If someone dresses like you and covers you in a drag show, to me, you made it,” Lambert said.

“I don’t know if there’s a more joyful place on Earth than a drag brunch,” she continued. “It’s just, like, mimosas and people being their full selves and no-holds-barred. It felt like it would set the tone for this record.”

Queer country singer Dallas Dixon was among those to respond to Lambert’s comments, saying, “This woman is THE one to support in country music. She’s always been an ally, but beyond that, she is one of the best songwriters in ANY genre. I said what I said! ????”

Others were similarly impressed by Lambert’s words.

Others questioned whether Lambert is right-wing, given she’s a country star from Texas, and she appeared alongside Kid Rock earlier this year on one of his Rock The Country festival dates. She also performed at last December’s Kennedy Center Honors, in honor of fellow country star George Strait.

Lambert declines to reveal her personal politics or endorse candidates. However, as others pointed out, she’s long been an LGBTQ+ ally. Here she is five years ago talking to GLAAD about her support for the queer community.

That Lambert’s still singing the praises of drag brunches now, at a time when there’s been political backlash against anything deemed “woke,” says something.

As for Lambert deciding to call her new album Crisco, no, that had nothing to do with some gay men opting to use the all-vegetable shortening as a form of lubricant for… well, extreme play. It’s a wordplay on the album’s mix of country and disco. Think string-heavy country tunes that you can dance to, harking back to tracks such as Dolly Parton’s “Islands In The Stream.”
