When Americans consider traveling overseas, where are they daydreaming about going? Even better, what can we prove when figuring out where they want to go?
Analyzing Google search data for 140 cities over the past 12 months to find the most in-demand overseas destinations from the US gives us some facts. Adding in the most popular searches on GayCities itself completes the puzzle.
Mexico City is the most in-demand city to travel to from the US. Each month, 47,318 searches in the US for trips to the city occur. Specifically, “Flights Mexico City” was the top-searched term, making up 45,395 searches. The Mexican capital is also the most popular search on GayCities, and articles about the city are some of the most popular on the site.

Lisbon, Portugal, came in sixth place using Google search data, but Italy scored several cities in the rounded-out top ten. Venice was the seventh most popular, Milan was eighth, Florence ninth, and Naples came in at tenth place.
In a recent survey, GayCities readers chose Amsterdam, the Netherlands, as the city they most want to visit. It ranks third among the most popular city guides.
And finally, Berlin, Germany, is fourth on the GayCities popularity ranking. Most users want information about the city’s popular nightclubs and bathhouses.
“While searches for overseas destinations may not seem as high as some people are expecting, many Americans choose to fly to domestic city destinations for their trips,” Magdalena Petrusic from Dubai Tours & Tickets said. “This is potentially due to the fact flights to other continents could end up costing thousands.”
