Turns out, LGBTQ+ folks have been main characters of the computer science script all along. Queer pioneers of computer science include cryptanalyst Alan Turing, of course, but also IBM programmer Edie Windsor, open-source software advocate Jon “Maddog” Hall, 59DaysOfCode creator Irma Olguin, Jr., and former U.S. Chief Technology Officer Megan Smith, according to The Coding Space.
In a recent r/gaybros Reddit thread about gay programmers, commenters included a computer science student, a full-time engineer, an engineering manager with a FAANG company, a consultant for a banking software company, a software developer, a network engineer, and a senior iOS/Swift developer.
Meanwhile, on social media, gay coders have been identifying themselves as such in their captions and hashtags. Here are selections from Instagram’s batch—or shall we say, elements from that array?
