Saturday is Repair Day, and we have a feeling the handy workers featured below could fix more than just our cars.

Created by the Open Repair Alliance and coordinated by The Restart Project, Repair Day is an annual celebration “for everyone who makes repair happen in their communities around the world” and an occasion to “celebrate the power of repair to bring our communities together, reduce our impact on the planet, and teach new skills,” according to its website.

Speaking of community-building, some blue-collar gays are also fixing their industries. In 2021, NBC News profiled queer mechanics like Eli Allison, owner of Repair Revolution, a Seattle auto shop where every employee was either female or queer or both.

“Every single day we hear from at least one customer about what an amazing experience this has been and how much more they knew about their car when they left this place than when they came in,” Allison said at the time. “That’s why we exist. That gives me hope that people are hungry for this.”

Meanwhile, repair-minded gays have been staking out a space on social media.

“Welder/fabricator/mechanic/builder here,” one Reddit user said in a thread about gay mechanics and car bros.

“I’m a casual car enthusiast and a HVAC/R tech,” said another.

“Industrial mechanic and general car guy,” a third person said. “Used to work as a marine mechanic.”

A fourth wrote, “I’m not a mechanic per se, but I know my way around an engine and other moving parts on a car. Also pretty decent in a wood shop or a maintenance situation.”

Now just check out the gay mechanics and handymen below to see more folks in the trade.
