Thomas Massie humiliates Mike “Poison Pill” Johnson after fresh MAGA defeat

It seems like Mike Johnson’s humiliation deepens every week, and we’d feel a lot worse if the anti-LGBTQ+ Speaker of the House wasn’t signing himself up for it by simping for Tr*mp’s agenda.

For most of this year, a big piece of that agenda has been Tr*mp’s racist SAVE Act, a consistently-defeated measure that, if passed, would force voters to show physical ID at polling locations across the country. An even more ghoulish version of the measure would have made states submit voter rolls to the federal government in a clear betrayal of 15th Amendment.

The SAVE Act has been through several big changes in its short life, but even in a tamed down, expurgated form, politicians from both parties have spoken out about the measure’s many problematic points, including the big one: millions of Americans are not in possession of a photo ID, a fact that would essentially erase their ability to cast a vote under the act’s specifications.

Which is exactly what MAGA Republicans want. In fact, Johnson and his fellow GOP figureheads are so committed to getting Tr*mp’s dead-in-the-water act passed that they’ve invoked the high holy name of Olive Garden—which now requires ID for members to access their unlimited pasta deal—in a last-ditch attempt to make SAVE happen.

Which brings us to today’s Johnson drama. This week, the speaker reamed Democrats over their refusal to pass the SAVE Act. His logic? Because Republicans hitched the bill to a measure that would restrict congressional stock trading, Johnson decided that Democrats just didn’t want to reign in corruption and insider trading in Washington. By his logic, if they’d cared enough about that issue, they would have passed the SAVE Act just to see the other bill enacted. “Nearly 200 Democrats voted to ALLOW Members of Congress to participate in shady stock trading and voted AGAINST requiring voter ID at the polls,” Johnson cried on X this week.

But that dog won’t hunt, and Thomas Massie was quick to call BS on the whole thing. Replying to Johnson’s tweet, Massie pointed out that the stock trading bill isn’t the problem here—it’s the SAVE Act.

“You could ban stock trading by U.S. Representatives tomorrow,” Massie wrote. “Instead you put this political gimmick up for a vote which had a poison pill for Dems in it—Voter ID.”

Massie and his fellow non-Tr*mp-pilled Republicans aren’t taking the bait. The SAVE Act has already died many deaths, and Tr*mp still refuses to give up on the discriminatory measure.

Johnson had no response for Massie, who along with Senators Bill Cassidy, Thom Tillis, and John Cornyn are creating a formidable GOP resistance against Tr*mp’s unconstitutional war, his plans for a J6 slush fund, and his now-scrapped Todd Blanche appointment.

Massie was the first Republican to publicly stand against Tr*mp after losing his primary race earlier this year. At that point, the co-author of the Epstein Files Transparency Act realized he had nothing to lose and started causing massive problems for the president in the House. At the time, it was a risky move. But now, with Mitch McConnell and Lindsey Graham out of the picture, Republicans in both the House and Senate are finally feeling bold enough to stop Tr*mp in his tracks.

Which is terrible news for Mike Johnson, one of the few Tr*mp cabinet members who hasn’t yet abandoned the sinking ship.

Massie is far from a perfect figure. Before seeing the light, the Kentucky rep. voted for an earlier iteration of the SAVE Act, and we definitely don’t appreciate the recent retweet that (however jokingly) characterized the act as “fake and gay” (derogatory.) But at this point, anyone who’s willing to read Johnson the riot act—and embarrass him publicly—is fighting the good fight.
