Tommy Dorfman to direct the film adaptation of Laura Dean Keeps Breaking Up with Me

The popular queer graphic novel Laura Dean Keeps Breaking Up with Me is set to get a film adaptation with Tommy Dorfman attached.

According to a report from Deadline, the 13 Reasons Why star has signed on to direct and executive produce the film adaptation under her production company, Down The Line Productions.

Mariko Tamaki, author of the novel, is set to write the screenplay – with Wilding Pictures and LA’s MXN Entertainment co-producing the film.

Like its 2019 graphic novel counterpart, the coming-of-age story will follow Frederica “Freddie” Riley as she navigates her on-again-off-again relationship with Laura Dean.

The synopsis reads: “Laura Dean is the most popular girl in school and Frederica ‘Freddie’ Riley’s dream girl. She has it all: charm, confidence, and charisma. But there’s one problem… Laura Dean keeps breaking up with her.

“The story follows Freddie’s journey to finding the courage to end her toxic relationship and regain her self-love, with the help of her best friends and a psychic.”

In a statement to the aforementioned news outlet, Dorfman expressed her excitement for the film and working with Mariko’s “groundbreaking” script.

“This film is like the lovechild of John Hughes and Jamie Babbett with a fresh and honest perspective on love and queer chosen family,” she explained to Deadline.

“Reading the script for the first time, I was transported into the layered world she created, and I can’t wait to bring this story to life for everybody to enjoy.”

Mariko echoed similar sentiments on Instagram, writing: “So thrilled to have @tommy.dorfman on as the director for a live-action Laura Dean feature!

“This book was a labor of love by myself and @hirosemaryhello ???? and I am excited to watch it shape shift into its newest form.”

Laura Dean Keeps Breaking Up with Me isn’t the only LGBTQIA+ YA novel that Dorfman is bringing to life.

Since 2022, the Insatiable star has been hard at work on the upcoming adaptation of Mason Deaver’s hit novel I Wish You All The Best.

The film is set to follow high school student Ben, who’s thrown out of their parent’s home after coming out as non-binary.

After moving in with their estranged sister Hannah and her husband Thomas, Ben is forced to unpack their trauma, survive their senior year and navigate a blossoming relationship with fellow high school student Nathan Allan.

I Wish You All The Best cast will feature Corey Fogelmanis as Ben, Miles Guiterrez-Riley as Nathan, Alexandra Daddario as Hannah, Cole Sprouse as Thomas, Lisa Yamada as Sophie and Lexi Underwood as Meleika.
