Whether it was co-starring in the much-discussed HBO mini series The Idol or dropping queer banger of the summer “Rush”, 2023 has seen Australian pop icon Troye Sivan dominate the cultural conversation.
The actor-musician shows no signs of slowing down as we get into the cooler months, however, with a full-length album titled Something to Give Each Other due for release in early October.
And now, Sivan has once again jumped to the top of our minds after opening up about a surprising detail of his creative process in a new interview with Rolling Stone AU/NZ.
Specifically, the 28-year-old revealed that he sniffed poppers before posing for the single artwork for “Rush” (itself, a reference to a popular poppers brand) in order to capture “the same flushed feeling” which amyl nitrite bestows upon recreational users.
“If you go back there’s this tiny vein on my head,” the singer shared. “It’s my favourite part of the picture.”
Later into the interview, the musician shared that the forthcoming album was partially inspired by a hookup. “We were lying in bed and he was like, ‘This is one of life’s greatest pleasures, connecting with people in this way.’”
Sivan continued: “Obviously the hook-up is fun, but he’s like, ‘Even if I never see you again, we get to have this really special moment together.’”
The themes of connection and togetherness runs throughout the album, with Sivan writing in an announcement post: “This album is my something to give you – a kiss on a dancefloor, a date turned into a weekend, a crush, a winter, a summer. Party after party, after party, after party. Heartbreak, freedom. Community, sisterhood, friendship. All that.”
Something to Give Each Other is available to stream and download from 13 October 2023.
