Ottawa: Welcoming & Inclusive Canadian Capital

Ottawa, Canada’s capital city, isn’t just about politics and historical landmarks – it’s a thriving hub of LGBTQ+ life, consistently ranking among the most 2SLGBTQ+ friendly cities in Canada. The city’s progressive spirit is evident in its policies, with comprehensive protections for queer individuals in housing, employment, and services. Ottawa boasts a rich LGBTQ+ history, as the site of Canada’s first gay rights demonstration in 1971, commemorated by the vibrant “We Demand” mural in the heart of the “gayborhood” called Village.

Do you actually know what the 2S in the abbreviation stands for? 2S for “Two-spirit” refers to a person who identifies with both a male and a female being and is used by some indigenous peoples to describe their sexual, gender and/or spiritual identity.

This historic neighborhood, spanning several blocks on Bank Street, is the epicenter of 2SLGBTQ+ life, brimming with queer-owned businesses, lively bars, and welcoming community spaces like Kind Space, a dedicated LGBTQ+ community center. Rainbow crosswalks and flags proudly display Ottawa’s commitment to inclusivity throughout the city, while annual events like Capital Pride Ottawa 2024 draw thousands to celebrate love and diversity. Whether exploring the city’s vibrant culinary scene, immersing yourself in the arts, or simply strolling through the charming streets, Ottawa’s warm embrace and unwavering acceptance make it a haven for LGBTQ+ travelers and locals alike.

“Our mission is to create opportunities to celebrate, advocate, educate and connect people, respecting the full diversity of the 2SLGBTQ+ community.” Capital Pride Ottawa

Queer-friendly businesses in Ottawa’s Village

During our travels around the world, we like to support queer-owned or outspoken, queer-friendly businesses. Naturally, we are delighted to read about Ottawa’s vibrant 2SLGBTQ+ scene, which we want to highlight at this point. The focus is set on the Centretown stretch of Bank Street, just south of Parliament Hill, unmistakably recognizable by the rainbow-colored crosswalk, a testament to the area’s LGBTQ+ history and culture. Important locations and moments in the history of Ottawa’s 2SLGBTQ+ community have occurred in this part of Ottawa, leading to the official designation of Ottawa’s Village in 2011. Ottawa Tourism, a proud Rainbow Registered organization, is dedicated to promoting and supporting these and numerous other LGBTQ+ friendly establishments:
