Buffalo Bills help start a new local gay flag football league, the latest NFL team to support LGBTQ athletes

The Buffalo Bills are working to help to start a new LGBTQ flag football league in the Western New York area. The team is sponsoring the burgeoning league in Buffalo, which is being launched in conjunction with the National Gay Flag Football League.

“We are thrilled to bring inclusive flag football to Buffalo with the support of the Buffalo Bills. This exciting addition joins 27 other cities, and over 4,000 players, including straight allies, in the National Gay Flag Football League,” said NGFFL Commissioner Joel Horton.

The Bills are just the latest NFL team to support a local LGBTQ flag football league. The New England Patriots have a long-running relationship with the Boston league. The Los Angeles Rams also helped start a local LGBTQ flag football league. Other teams like the New York Giants and Seattle Seahawks have been strong supporters of their local leagues.

“We are excited to join the NFL and other clubs across the league in their support of the NGFFL,” said Buffalo Bills Vice President of Community Impact Michelle Roberts. “Through our sponsorship, we are looking forward to expanding the impact of the NGFFL in our community.”

No matter how much anti-gay voices keep screaming about the LGBTQ community and Pride, major sports just keep committing to building inclusive efforts for the gays.

In 2002, before the NGFFL was born, a national gay flag football league took its first breath when Gay Bowl I took place in Southern California with three cities: Los Angeles, San Francisco and Boston. Months later a second Gay Bowl took place in San Francisco, adding Atlanta, Chicago and San Diego. The NGFFL was soon born.

The NFL has a growing interest in flag football, using the sport to expand interest in football.

People interested in joining the LGBTQ-inclusive league in Buffalo can check out the NGFFL’s website for the burgeoning league.
