Almost a year on from an unforgettable summer for Spain’s Alba Redondo, scoring three goals in seven appearances at the Women’s World Cup, she’s making things official with her No. 1 fan, girlfriend Cristina Monleón.
Together on the pitch at Levante UD’s stadium, Estadio Ciutat de València, in true footballer style, Redondo’s wedding proposal flashed on the jumbotron: “Te quieres casar conmigo?” Will you marry me?
Redondo then got down on one knee, holding up a ring, a photo of the pair kissing after her World Cup success in the backdrop of the proposal.
The answer, of course, was yes!

“Quería estadio, toma estadio,” Redondo bragged afterwards about locking in the high-profile engagement venue at her team’s home turf. “I wanted the stadium, I got the stadium.”
Monleón, a sports and exercise scientist at the University of Valencia, has long been supporting her girlfriend on the pitch, so the location couldn’t be more perfect.
Redondo was one of almost 100 publicly out gay, lesbian, bi, trans and queer athletes Outsports has identified at the Australia and New Zealand-hosted World Cup last year. In spite of an issue of player boycotts leading into the tournament, the Spanish team would go on to defeat England, 1-0, in the final to take home the Women’s World Cup trophy for the first time in their country’s history.
Earlier in January, she ranked 61st on the Guardian’s 2023 list of the 100 Best Female Footballers in the World, a lineup which includes a number of other out players including Redondo’s countrymen Jenni Hermoso at #15 and Mapi León at #8.
Rendondo won’t just be sharing her future with her fiancee, but with her contract up with Levante at the end of this month, it’s been reported that she will be starting a new chapter with Real Madrid as well.
Redondo has expressed a hope that she will represent Spain in the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics, as she did for the World Cup.
