On the advice of her son, this momma was preparing for “Locktober.”

That is, until thousands of people on TikTok came to her rescue, and told her what the phrase really means.

Long celebrated in kink circles, “Locktober” has gone mainstream. That means a phrase that refers to the practice of locking away one’s genitals during spooky season is often misappropriated by people who couldn’t differentiate a chastity cage from a birdcage.

Scary indeed!

How about we take this to the next level?

The latest viral example is a mom named Carolin, who lives in Tampa, Florida. On TikTok, Carolin often dispenses beauty and lifestyle advice for other women.

At the start of this month, she informed her followers about a conversation she just had with her son. He told her it was time to “lock in.”

She immediately seized the opportunity.

“So here we are. We’re locking in,” she said. “What’s your goal for Q4?”

Oh honey… NO!!! As one commenter put it: “Your son is either playing the funniest joke on you or is completely naive and innocent.”

“Locktober” doesn’t mean what they think it does…

Straight guys not understanding “Locktober”

There is an inglorious history of straight guys getting “Locktober” very, very wrong.

Often outfitted in backwards hats, they declare that it’s “September 31” (a date that doesn’t exist) and time to “crush” all of their goals for the final three months of the year. With their boorish antics and comical ignorance, they are not a sympathetic bunch.

Given the novelty of chastity play–it sat on the margins of the gay kink scene until the proliferation of social media–straight dudes could once be excused for not knowing what exactly to “lock in.”

But now, we’re several years into the virality of “Locktober.” To answer the commenter’s question, we think mom may have been pranked.

Regardless, she handled her newfound notoriety with aplomb.

“I learned a lot”

In a follow-up TikTok, Carolin acknowledges she’s been led astray.

“I was literally yesterday years old when I realized that I cannot use the term ‘Locktober’ to mean ‘locking into your goals for October’ and that it has a very different alternative meaning,” she says. “Thank you guys for laughing at me, for laughing with me, and for being genuinely kind.”

Honestly, Carolin seems like a very nice lady, and one who supports people locking into October however they desire. With that in mind, she brings up a salient point.

Why would someone in her position know what “Locktober” is, anyway?

“You would think that I would know that 51. But the reality is, why would I know what that means?” she asks. “I had no idea.”

After a brush with viral fame, she alerts her new fans that she’s going back to reviewing beauty care products for mature women. But she’ll always have the memories.

“I appreciate you guys being here. It’s been a fun,” she says. “I learned a lot.”

For those interested in learning more about “Locktober,” or chastity in general, we recommend reading perspectives from people who participate.

They often say the restriction results in profound liberation. As a locked boy told the Gay Times, “It’s really great for focus. I can use that pent up energy and shift it in a different direction like working out or doing a presentation for work.”

In other words, a chastity cage allows him to… lock in?

Maybe mom was right after all!
