Team Canada women’s hockey captain Marie-Philip Poulin exited Canada’s 5-1 win over the Czech Republic in Winter Olympics pool play in Milan due to a first-period injury.
Poulin was met with an illegal hit by Czech Republic’s Kristyna Kaltounkova at 8:52 in the first period when it looked that Kaltounkova’s upper arm made contact with Poulin’s helmet and Canada holding 1-0 lead.
The Czech player received a two-minute penalty. Canada’s three-time Olympic gold medal winner limped off the ice and appeared to be keeping weight off of her right leg.
She did return to the ice later in the first period after being checked out in the team’s locker room, but she did return for the second period.
The injury didn’t slow Canada’s momentum. Five minutes later, Sarah Fillier added a goal, followed by a goal from Poulin’s wife, Laura Stacey, as Canada raced to a 4-0 lead at the end of the first period.

Poulin has a reputation for being Team USA’s nightmare with medals on the table. The player nicknamed “Captain Clutch” has scored the game-winner against the Americans in Olympic or world championships finals four times.
