Cardi B, Gay Halloween & Ryan Beatty’s concert: 10 things we’re obsessed with this week

Clothes, 'The Craft,' and Cardi B, as usual!

What a week to be gay!

If the shower scene viewed ’round the world wasn’t enough, La Bola Negra hit theaters and Ryan Murphy announced the Glee-boot is, indeed, a go.

Plus, Troye Sivan spilled on relationships, Mary Beth Barone talked bi awakenings, we celebrated International Pronouns Day, and geeked over theater gays.

Otherwise, it’s been clothes, The Craft, and Cardi B, as usual.

Below, check out the 10 things we’re obsessed with this week.

1. Halloween costumes

With Halloweekend looming, there isn’t much time until Spirit Halloween stores across the country turn into pumpkins themselves, forced to sit vacant in strip-mall sadness until next fall rolls around.

Nevertheless, the home of seasonal haunts still has some kitschy and fun options that costume party procrastinators shouldn’t overlook. My personal faves: the crowd-pleasing Wine Box Costume ($39.99), a dependable Bob Ross Painting Costume ($29.99), and this slightly creepy Pop-Tarts Costume ($49.99), which may or may not glow in the dark room.

2. Tierra Sagrada Coloring Book

National Hispanic Heritage Month may have ended last week, but there’s never a bad time to support a Mexicano artist, especially a queer one like Bryan Montes-Terrazas.

Under his brand YAMZ World, the Denver-based illustrator creates bold and colorful works of art rooted in both culture and queer identity, like the Tierra Sagrada Coloring Book, on sale for $19.99 on LGBTQ Outpost. Not only do its pages celebrate Mexico and its natural beauty, but each order comes with a four-pack of stickers.

3. Ryan Beatty at The Brooklyn Paramount

Ryan Beatty admitted that he felt “tenderly reverent and excited” when he took to the stage at Brooklyn Paramount last weekend for the final stop on his U.S. tour. It seemed to be both a poetic admission and a contagious feeling, giving the sold-out crowd permission to scream along to his trademark songs for 90 minutes.

Throughout the show, largely comprised of acoustic-leaning tunes from his new album Sweet Fortune, the songwriting virtuoso flexed his vocal prowess and growing performance capabilities, captivating the room with minimal movement, dazzling lights, and bleeding-heart lyricism. I’ve never been so happy to cry in public.

And while Beatty’s stateside tour has wrapped, you still have a chance to catch him in a handful of cities across Europe through November.

4. Wool, mamaw

As the word “brisk” begins to frequent our weekly weather vocabulary, now is the perfect time to add some wool to your wardrobe. Thankfully, H&M has got you covered with this relaxed-fit knit polo sweater, available in light dusty blue or dark beige and on sale for $37.50.

With a casual fit, ribbed sleeves, and a soft feel, it’s never been so comfortable being the gay sheep of the family. Bah, bah, mamaw!

5. Cardi B’s Tiny Desk Concert

I dare you to find a more joyful way to spend 20 minutes on the internet than Cardi B‘s Tiny Desk Concert, which premiered on YouTube earlier this week. Wearing a power blazer, leather pants, and backed by a full band, her superstar rap hits take on a new depth as she spits bars about boys, bills, and knowing one’s worth.

I’m not ashamed to admit I was taking iPhone videos of my TV screen like I was at a concert myself.

6. And I Will Tell You Mine: Notes From a Life in Progress by Sophia Bush

Actress and activist Sophia Bush knows the power of a good story. Not only did she spend decades bringing some of our faves to life on screen–One Tree Hill hive, where you at?!—but she’s lived out unbelievable ones of her own behind-the-scenes.

In her debut memoir (on sale for $26.39 on Amazon), the 44-year-old spills on her bohemian L.A. childhood, marriage, divorce, discovering her queerness, and finding chosen family, with zero spin and 100% unflinching honesty.

7. The Craft

No spooky season is complete without my annual rewatch of 1996’s The Craft. Being a teenage girl with a temper and occult sensibilities has never looked so fierce or scary. It’s nostalgic, it’s campy, and it never fails to solicit a chuckle from me when Fairuza Balk’s character cries out, “He’s still in me.!” (IYKYK.)

8. The Chicago Steamworks Halloween decorations

The seasonal decor at Steamworks, Chicago’s favorite gay bathhouse, puts every front yard in my parent’s neighborhood to shame. That said, I’d stay away from any corner that looks like it’s covered in spiderwebs. You know, for, erm, reasons.

9. A Man From the Future by Pet Shop Boys Vinyl

The Pet Shop Boys are back! This month, the iconic synth-pop duo dropped their new album A Man From The Future, available on exclusive green and orange 2LP for $49.98 online.

The record doubles as both an atmospheric, trippy sonic joy ride and a lesson in queer history, recounting the biography of gay computer pioneer and codebreaker Alan Turing throughout its eight tracks. With narration from actress Juliet Stevenson inspired by Turing biographer Andrew Hodges’ work, the Pet Shop Boys provide the perfect sound bed to a honor a man who dreamed of machines.

10. Anna Wintour at the Harry Styles concert

The older I get, the more I feel like Anna Wintour at the Harry Styles concert: expressionless, tired but unwilling to give up going out on a Friday night, and nonetheless, still looking fabulous.
