Chappell Roan debuts new sapphic country song ‘The Giver’ on SNL

Chappell Roan has done it again!

On 2 November, the beloved talent made her highly anticipated debut on Saturday Night Live alongside returning host John Mulaney.

Of course, Chappell absolutely slayed her appearance, with the ‘Naked in Manhattan’ singer delivering an ethereal rendition of ‘Pink Pony Club’ for her first performance.

However, for her second performance of the evening, the 26-year-old signer opted out of playing hits such ‘Good Luck, Babe’ or ‘Hot To Go’, instead surprising fans with a new sapphic country anthem, ‘The Giver.’

Dressed in a stunning Western-inspired ensemble and voluminous hair reminiscent of Dolly Parton, Chappell oozed confidence while singing the track’s cheeky lyrics about expertly pleasing a woman and “getting the job done”.

“All you country boys saying you know how to treat a woman, right? Well, only a woman knows how to treat a woman right,” Chappell exclaimed during the song’s bridge. “She gets the job done!”

Shortly after the episode aired, fans took to social media to celebrate the singer-songwriter’s incredible and unapologetically queer SNL performances.

One viewer on Twitter/X wrote: “You can’t deny Chappell Roan’s impact. I can’t remember the last time a singer had the whole SNL audience sing along with them.”

Another fan on Reddit commented: “This fits right in with the kick ass women of country with that Chappell flair (lesbian, duh). I could see her with The Chicks or Miranda or Wynonna or Dolly. Wow that was amazing.”

A third person added: “EVERY SINGLE TIME YOU THINK CHAPPELL ROAN CAN’T PERFORM ANY BETTER THAN SHE GOES AND SAYS “BET!!!!” HER SNL PERFORMANCE WAS AMAZING!!”

Chappell’s epic SNL debut comes a few months after she teased her new music era with Rolling Stone.

“[The next single] needs to have more grit, whether that means more pop grit or rock grit or just bite to the lyrics,” she said. “Anything that I listen to — Joan Jett, Heart, Gaga — I want to feel like them. So I’ll just be inspired by that feeling and how I can capture it.”

That’s not all: Chappell confirmed that she’s working on a sophomore album and has already completed five/six tracks. “We have a country song. We have a dancy song. We have one that’s really 80s, and we have one that’s acoustic, and we have one that’s really organic, live-band, 70s vibe. It’s super weird.”

On 29 October, the ‘Casual’ artist added even more fuel to the fire when she seemingly confirmed the end of The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess era on Instagram.

“Album kinda popped off imo, but it is time to welcome a hot new bombshell into the villa,” she wrote alongside a photo of her posing with a vinyl copy of the record.
