Gay Wine Weekend returned to Sonoma Valley in California a couple of weeks ago. The annual gathering is always a delight for LGBTQ+ lovers of fine wine, sunshine and good company. However, this time it felt extra special as the event celebrated its 15th anniversary.
Running from July 17-19, events included: an opening reception; winemaker dinners at some of Sonoma’s finest restaurants; winery tours; a twilight tea-dance; a drag queen brunch and auction; and a closing pool soirée.

The host hotel was The Lodge at Sonoma. Restaurants participating included ‘the girl & the fig’ in Sonoma Plaza, Poppy in Glen Ellen, and Layla at MacArthur Park, among others.
Money raised for good causes
“It was amazing to recognize and celebrate 15 years of Gay Wine Weekend with long-time attendees along with so many new faces!” organizer Gary Saperstein told GayCities after the event.
“What better way to celebrate than to return to where the event began, in Sonoma Valley. After taking the event to the Russian River/Healdsburg region of Sonoma County, it was great to have this celebration return to this part of the county.”
Besides an opportunity to taste and stock up on amazing wines from the region, Gay Wine Weekend also raises money for good causes. This year, it notched up $51,000 for Face to Face, Sonoma County’s HIV/AIDS Network. We’ll raise a toast to that!
This year’s Gay Wine Weekend may have concluded, but the Sonoma and Napa Valley offer a gloriously indulgent escape for queer travelers at any time of the year. Expect world-class wineries, rolling vineyard landscapes, and exceptional fine dining in one of California’s most picturesque regions. The area’s relaxed, sophisticated atmosphere makes it an ideal destination for couples and groups alike.
