The Savannah Morning News reports:
Not long before the start of Pride Month, a Georgia school is in the national spotlight for alleged LGBTQ discrimination. High school senior Emily Wright attended North Cobb Christian School in Kennesaw, and planned to graduate from there this year, until she was called into the principal’s office. It was regarding her date to the recent prom.
“I was asked, ‘Is there anything we should know about the guest you brought to prom?'” Wright said to Fox 5 Atlanta.
“I knew exactly what they were talking about, so I said, ‘Yes, he’s transgender.'” Following this conversation, Tricia Wright, her mother, alleges that the principal called her and asked if she knew about this. When she said yes, the principal allegedly said they would have to expel her daughter.
Atlanta First News reports:
Tricia Wright said nothing in the school’s prom guidelines or the student code of conduct explicitly states LGBTQ+ individuals are not allowed to attend events. The prom took place off campus.
In a letter to the school’s principal and headmaster, Emily Wright’s parents said the “decision is not reflective of the Christian values you claim to uphold,” adding they believe the school made a “discriminatory decision.”
“The school chose to kick out a senior student just four weeks before graduation simply because Emily was being inclusive and kind,” the letter said.
According to the first report above, Emily was able to enroll at a public high school in time to graduate.
