Gay San Antonio Mayor Won’t Fight State On Rainbow Crosswalks: “My Pride Is Not Tied To This Paint” [Video]

Mayor Gina Ortiz Jones doesn’t think saving the rainbow crosswalks in the heart of the city’s “gay strip” is worth antagonizing Gov. Greg Abbott — and potentially jeopardizing state or federal funding coming to San Antonio.

“There are a number of ways that we can show our pride, make sure our community feels seen and heard, and we are not inviting unneeded retribution against the most vulnerable in our community,” she said Thursday at an event held to rally support for the crosswalks.

“We would be kidding ourselves if we don’t think that would come,” she said. “Look at what is happening in our country right now. We have to be smart, we have to stick up for ourselves — but y’all, my pride is not tied to this paint. You know why? Because it’s in my heart and my head.”

Read the full article. Jones declined to sign a city council resolution in support of the crosswalks. She is the city’s first openly gay mayor and previously served as the first out person to serve as undersecretary to the Air Force.
