“It’s a flood of just tons of energy in my DMs,” he gushed to People in a recent interview.
Although when it comes to his dating life, the 27-year-old does not kiss and tell! “It ain’t nobody’s business,” he added. LOL.
Of course, it helps that the “Location” singer has been embracing sexuality in his music and visuals like never before.
As he explained to People, his new album is “a celebration of being out and a representation of my queerness.”
Fittingly, the video for its lead single, “Out of Body,” depicts a sweaty and sexy romp in a public restroom with another man, and lyrics on his fourth album find him singing to lovers using male pronouns for the first time.
The sensual track and his steamy choreography have already earned compliments from other Black gay singers like Destin Conrad, and even garnered comparisons to pop queens like Britney Spears — the highest compliment any gay man could receive!
Of his new sonic inspiration, Khalid explained that he “wanted to make music that I like to listen to myself,” while paying tribute to artists like Britney and Rihanna who “really charged [his] freedom of expression as a child.”
“I’ve always dreamt of being this pop star,” he said. “I really tapped into that little boy and gave him his shine that he always wanted.” Aww!
Throughout his new record’s 16 tracks, it’s clear that the Texas-born singer is more comfortable in his skin than ever before. (And he admitted as much when he played his first-ever Pride event in June, telling the crowd, “I feel like I’m home.”)
As he told People, the biggest difference in his life has been feeling “comfortable in gay places publicly,” and allowing himself to play with “[his] balance of femininity and masculinity” for the first time.
“I feel like I was never able to do that freely before,” he said. “Now I am, and I’m just having so much fun. No more hiding.”
And despite the less-than-ideal circumstances that led to him publicly coming out, it seems that Khalid has found closure.
“I feel like when it comes down to [the ex who outed me], I feel like when I closed the door years ago, I just wanted that door to remain closed,” he said.
“There’s just no point of opening it. I feel like sometimes we confuse closure to be this two-way street. It’s closed on my end, and that’s just how it’s going to stay.”
And let’s be real, the singer doesn’t have time to worry about the past now, anyway — he’s too busy serving!
