P-Town’s iconic Commercial Street just got an exciting new nonprofit neighbor
A Provincetown-based nonprofit is moving in on Commercial Street!

Commercial Street is about to look a little bit different, thanks to Provincetown-based nonprofit Summer of Sass and an anonymous donor.
Last month, the organization (which serves LGBTQ+ young adults living in oppressive states by relocating them for the summer and providing them with a place to live and work) announced it’s entered into an agreement to purchase 265 Commercial Street.
The mixed-use property, which P-Town local and visitors may remember as the former Waydowntown restaurant, will not only allow Summer of Sass to expand its housing but generate revenue by renting the commercial space.
“It is an expansion of possibility,” Kristen Becker, founder and executive director of Summer of Sass, explained.

“The commercial space gives us an opportunity to generate revenue that directly supports our mission. That means more stability, more capacity, and more freedom to focus on the young people we deserve.”
Of course, change does not happen overnight, and the nonprofit is currently fundraising to furnish and outfit the commercial kitchen so the Commercial Street building can “become fully functional, mission-aligned, and ready to serve.”
That said, Becker and the team are hoping to host pop-up events in the space as early as August, with more to come by spring 2027.
Considering Commercial Street and its off-chute restaurants, bars, and shops is the beating heart of Provincetown tourism, it’s an exciting update for a queer and community-centered city, and part of the nonprofit’s longterm goals of SASStainability. (We see what you did there!)
But most importantly, it helps ensure that Summer of Sass can continue the mission it set out to achieve nearly 10 years ago: Give LGBTQ+ young adults a chance to experience Provincetown as a place of belonging and possibility.
“This is how we build something that lasts,” Becker said. “SASStainbility means protecting the mission, protecting the young people we serve, and protecting the future of queer community in Provincetown.”
To celebrate, the organization is also giving away a deluxe stay in P-Town for its unbeatable Carnival Weekend, starting August 15, so if you’ve been looking for a sign to attend, this might just be it.
