Shane Gillis mocked women’s gym shorts. This college decathlete responded with even shorter ones.
After Shane Gillis mocked women's gym shorts, college decathlete Chase Lathrop knew the best response: His shorter shorts.

Comedian Shane Gillis has come under an avalanche of criticism over the last few days for a bad joke he made in his opening monologue last weekend hosting Saturday Night Live.
Now a college decathlete is weighing in. Well hello Chase Lathrop!
It all started last Saturday when Gillis tried to seemingly mock his own out-of-shape body by talking about how rarely he goes to the gym.
“I haven’t been to the gym in so long I didn’t know women just dress like whores now,” Gillis said in his SNL opening monologue. “There’s no other way to describe it. The shorts. Have you seen the shorts?”

People across social media, including many celebrities, have criticized Gillis, calling the “joke” an example of misogyny.
Some of the higher-profile criticism has come from out gay multi-hyphenate and “Schitt’s Creek” co-creator Dan Levy. And… Flavor Flav. If you’re on the wrong end of Flavor Flav, what do you even say?
Chase Lathrop wears short shorts. The gays aren’t mad about it.
One of the latest to weigh in is college decathlete Chase Lathrop.
The sophomore at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, who is straight, posted a reel on Instagram this week poking fun at Gillis’ dumb joke wearing, yes, short shorts. He made a great point.
“Hey Shane, I wear shorter shorts than every girl I know, so what does that make me?” Lathrop asked on Instagram as he pole vaulted and hurdled in the video.
We’re not sure what those shorts — of course, common in track and field — makes him, but we’re certainly glad for the short shorts and all his shirtless pics on Instagram.
And yeah, Lathrop’s message is kind of the point. A lot of guys — including straight guys — are wearing shorter shorts and wearing more-revealing clothes.
Does that make the guys “whores”?
It’s the age-old dichotomy where a guy who might be dressing “to impress” is a stud, but a woman who might be scantily clad is… chastised.
Most gay guys are now just looking to get Lathrop’s short shorts. Or in his shorts. Ba dum bum.
But sorry boys, Lathrop is straight.
Chase Lathrop is from Bradenton, Fla., near Sarasota. He competed for Iowa State as a freshman and transferred to Louisiana-Lafayette for the 2025-26 school year. Last season he scored over 7,000 points in the decathlon — 7,093, the second-best in school history.
As for Shane Gillis, this isn’t the first time he’s come under fire for poor taste in jokes. Last year he hosted the ESPYs and made a crack about Karl-Anthony Towns being gay.
