Sorry MAGA, Chucky is a proud PFLAG dad & he’s pro-trans

This killer doll isn't a monster after all.

Apparently, even primordial evil has to draw the line somewhere: If you thought everyone’s favorite murderous, foul-mouthed doll was backing Tr*mp and his minions, think again.

Don Mancini, the openly gay creator of the Chucky horror franchise, has officially come out and said what Chucky can’t, presumably because he’s too busy hatching his next evil plot. The eponymous doll of the long-running camptastic franchise is steadfastly Democrat.

In a now-viral response to MAGA queen Nicki Minaj using an AI image of Chucky to drum up red votes, Mancini stood ten toes down for Chucky, and for the trans community. “Chucky has a trans kid. Chucky protects the dolls. Chucky is anti-ICE,” Mancini wrote.

How about we take this to the next level?

As if we had a single doubt in our minds! We haven’t forgotten that back in 2021, Chucky got his own TV show where he showed up for his genderfluid child Glen (or Glenda.) Mancini took the opportunity for an Ed Wood reference and ran with it, reminding viewers of the post-credits birth sequence in Bride of Chucky, in which Chucky and his wife Tiffany have trouble agreeing on their baby’s gender and decide to name them both Glen and Glenda.

In the 2021 show, Chucky assures a school-aged Glen/da that there is nothing wrong with being gay, and nothing wrong with being trans for that matter!

We didn’t forget, but it looks like Nicki Minaj did. Which makes sense, because when you sell your soul to MAGA, your memory gets conveniently wiped.

Mancini has been a community hero since the first Child’s Play movie in 1988. Like fellow queer horror creator Kevin Williamson, Mancini has been wonderfully intentional about integrating queer and trans themes in the Chucky franchise. What’s more subversive, after all, than a killer doll?

“I wanted to create a final boy instead of a final girl,” Mancini told the New York Times of the 2021 reboot. “It’s not something I ever saw when I was [series hero] Jake’s age. Fortunately the world has turned.”

It certainly has! Back then, networks were thrilled to give Chucky a new life as a proud “PFLAG dad.” In fact, the queer storylines were what sold NBC on the reboot. “When he told us about centering this chapter of the story on a gay teen and how personal that was to him, we embraced the notion,” an NBCUniversal VP told the Times.

Since that time, of course, much has changed about the TV landscape. In the early 2020s, shows like Heartstopper, Sex Education, Genera+ion, We’re Here, and The Other Two flourished. Since 2024, it’s been a different story.

But after this week, we could be in line for another about-face from networks once again willing to embrace queer storytelling—not to mention the money it brings in. Chucky might be silly, vulgar, and campy boots—but no one can deny that as a franchise, it is, like its title character, undying, and ever popular.

Don Mancini’s Chucky ran from 2021-2024, which now feels like a time capsule of the good years. Then again, who’s to say another reboot isn’t in store after Tuesday’s blue tsunami? We’ll just have to wait and see.
