That time when New England Patriots fans went ‘gay for Maye’

Drake Maye is so good, Patriots fans might just go gay for him.

Boston-area sports fans are known for being more than a little passionate about their favorite athletes.

From Larry Bird to Tom Brady and every Red Sox player in between, star players in the Northeast are treated as deities long before they start collecting title banners and MVP trophies.

Patriots quarterback Drake Maye is the latest savior for the glutinous Massachusetts sports fandom. The metro area that has eaten up 13 of the available championships in the four major professional North American sports leagues since 2000 looks to add another in a few weeks as the Pats are two games from their seventh Lombardi in 25 seasons.

Maye is the stud that is leading the way and carrying the baton for New England, and even the straightest, possibly drunkest fans in Boston are ready to go “Gay for Maye”.

As NBC10 Boston reporter Colton Bradford conducted fan interviews on the eve of the AFC Championship, Patriots fans started randomly chanting “gay for Maye!”

A gay man himself, Bradford joined in on the fun and admitted that he’s also infatuated with Tom Brady’s successor. The fans who started the raucous seemed to find Bradford’s wit quite funny.

The moment was a great example of the ways that gay and straight men can live in harmony while rooting for the same sports teams rather than throwing insults at those who are different. It was also a great bit of self-reflection for these fans who understand they may be a little too obsessed with an athlete who doesn’t even know they exist.

Knowing how much football means to these folks, it wouldn’t be shocking if they really were conditionally gay for the chance to win lucky championship number seven.

As for Maye, the North Carolina alumnus had an incredible sophomore season for the Patriots en route to the penultimate game of the season. He threw for 31 touchdown passes compared to only eight interceptions in the regular season.

These numbers put him in direct competition with Matthew Stafford for the MVP honors in 2025. Stafford is one of our ultimate sports daddies we can’t get enough of. If these Pats fans are any indication, Maye might make the next hot list in about a decade and a half.
