The Dodgers, Giants and umpires all wore rainbow-colored Pride hats on Pride Night

For nine innings, fans at Dodger Stadium got to see players for the Giants and Dodgers wearing Pride-themed hats. The post The Dodgers, Giants and umpires all wore rainbow-colored Pride hats on Pride Night appeared first on Outsports.

The San Francisco Giants beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 6-2 on Friday night to move into a first-place division tie with Los Angeles. The Dodgers-Giants rivalry is intense, but that didn’t prevent the teams from uniting to have their players — along with the umpire — wear rainbow-themed Pride hats at the Dodgers’ Pride Night.

The Dodgers’ annual Pride Night might be the best in sports. They sold 15,000 tickets and offered a cool Pride-themed jersey as a giveaway. The event featured some LGBTQ celebrities like Olympic diver Tom Daley, plus a kickball game on the field hosted by Out Loud Sports, an LGBTQ sports organization.

The real treat, though, was seeing the players for both teams sporting the hats with the iconic “SF” and “LA” in rainbow colors on the field for nine innings. The teams have MLB’s permission to do this, a tradition that first happened in 2022.

29 Major League Baseball teams rock Pride Night swag. 1 still refuses.
Pride Night rainbows are breaking out all over baseball during MLB Pride this June. And this year’s Pride Guide winner is a legit shocker.

I have not seen where any player on the field for either team wore a non-Pride hat, though someone at the game posted online that relief pitcher Blake Treinen was not wearing a Pride hat while an interview of him played on the big screen at Dodger Stadium. This is not a big surpise since he is publicly pro-MAGA and refused to visit the White House in 2021 after the Dodgers won the 2020 World Series and Joe Biden was president.

In addition, pitcher Clayton Kershaw was seen in the dugout wearing a Pride cap that was altered with the handwritten name of the Biblical verse “Genesis 9:12-16,” part of which reads: “Whenever the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and all living creatures of every kind on the Earth.” Kershaw is very public about his Christian faith, so this appears to be another interpretation of the rainbow colors.

On a team with 25 players, plus coaches, no team will find unanimity, but the important point is that both the Giants and Dodgers donned the hats without any of the public drama we saw in the NHL in 2023, which led to a ban on Pride-themed warmups jerseys. In this fraught year, that counts as a win.
