Angel Rivera Releases First Photography Book ‘Calor’ with Exclusive LA Launch

Angel Rivera and I first connected earlier this year to talk about his photography as a tool for reclaiming hidden parts of himself. Now, six years of work have converged into his premiere book, Calor.

The title didn’t exist when Rivera first began organizing his files. For a long time, the digital folder sat on his computer under the label “AngelS1.” The word Calor, Spanish for “heat,” only surfaced when he looked for a single term to summarize the emotional climate of the work.

“The title Calor speaks to both the physical and emotional atmosphere in my work,” Rivera says. “There’s a feeling of warmth, intensity, desire, and the energy of bodies in motion.”

A short poem written by his best friend, Andres Filgueira, sits inside the pages to set the scene:

It rises from pavement, Gathers in rooms, Slips beneath clothing, Impossible to ignore It pulls color back to the surface, And makes the skin shine in the light Under its influence, Everything becomes brighter, And a little less innocent. From Digital Folders to Heavyweight Pages

Rivera was raised in Tampa, Florida, with Puerto Rican and Cuban roots, before moving to Los Angeles eight years ago. Calor brings together 202 photographs taken between 2020 and 2026, spanning 255 glossy pages.

Moving from computer screens to a massive physical object required a deliberate design shift. Rivera partnered with Prague-based graphic designer Štěpán Sova to build the covers and internal layouts from scratch. The finished product is a heavy, nine-by-twelve-inch hardcover weighing four pounds.

“I decided to make this book now because I finally felt like I had enough work under my belt,” Rivera shares. “My favorite books are thick and heavy, and I wanted that for Calor; I wanted it to feel premium. I also wanted the design to be something that hadn’t been done before and people would be proud to have displayed in their homes.” Unlearning Constraints and Finding Freedom

The visual themes of Calor lean heavily into intimacy and human movement. For Rivera, turning his lens toward these subjects meant examining his own background, which included growing up in the church and navigating strict ideas about what was considered off-limits.

Sensual themes appeared in his early pictures without him consciously planning them. Over time, making those elements the central focus became an active choice.

“There’s always been sensual or erotic undertones in my work, a lot of the time I wasn’t even aware of it until later,” Rivera notes. “It comes naturally to me, so finally opening up and shooting this type of work with intention has been so liberating.”

He still carries parts of his religious upbringing with him, balancing personal spirituality with a redefined view of his creative work.

“Spirituality is ingrained in me because of the way I was raised,” he explains. “I certainly have my issues with religion, but I do still find myself holding onto parts of the things I was taught, whether through prayer or talking to God or The Universe. It can be confusing for me, but it also somehow feels natural. I have come to accept that I am a sexual being living a normal human experience, and the older I get, the more I have stopped caring about how people perceive that. I’m excited to explore more of this in my work, I finally feel free.” Celebration and Gallery Launch in Los Angeles

To mark the release, Rivera is hosting a launch party and gallery exhibition featuring notable figures captured in the book, including Slayyyter, Destin Conrad, and Violet Chachki. Rivera is also running a social series breaking down the backstory of these portrait sessions.

The launch event takes place in Los Angeles on Sept. 5, featuring prints from the book alongside an interactive setup. Rivera and his husband are bringing a free photo booth from their company, Fotovision, for guests to use throughout the night.
