Big Freedia and SOPHIE’s long-lost EP finally arrives this June with a bold first single.

Big Freedia and SOPHIE’s Secret EP Is Finally Dropping After 10 Years

For fans of club music, queer artistry and boundary-pushing sound, a long-rumored collaboration is finally becoming reality. Big Freedia and the late SOPHIE are officially releasing a collaborative three-song EP on June 19, nearly a decade after the music was first created.

The project marks a major moment for both artists’ legacies. Known for reshaping their corners of music, Freedia and SOPHIE built careers on refusing convention. Now, their shared vision is getting a proper release after years of existing mostly in whispers among devoted fans.

The first taste arrives May 22 with “Blaze That Ass,” a track written by both artists, with SOPHIE handling production duties. A collaboration years in the making

According to the announcement, the songs originated during a recording session at SOPHIE’s Los Angeles home studio in 2016. The trio of tracks was largely completed in a single afternoon, pairing Freedia’s unmistakable New Orleans bounce energy with SOPHIE’s futuristic production style.

The release describes the EP as “a celebration of two of music’s most distinct creators and a testament to the timeless brilliance of SOPHIE.”

That fusion feels especially meaningful considering the impact both artists have had on queer music culture. Freedia helped bring bounce music to global audiences while remaining proudly and visibly queer in a genre landscape that has not always embraced LGBTQ+ artists. SOPHIE, meanwhile, became one of the defining architects of experimental pop and electronic music before her death in 2021.

Together, the artists created a sound that pushes both of their worlds into new territory.

“Recording with SOPHIE is something I hold even closer to my heart now, especially after her passing,” said Freedia. “She was an artist who showed the world that living boldly is your greatest power. With this EP, I want to show the world how loved she was and still is!”

SOPHIE’s family also reflected on the collaboration in a statement.

“This collaboration was exciting to Sophie right from the start,” said SOPHIE’s family. “Freedia’s energy and vocal power, a perfect match for her production. Their connection gave us these songs, all of them Sophie loved to play out, and we can’t wait to hear them in the club again.” Big Freedia heads back on tour

The EP announcement follows the release of Freedia’s 2025 gospel album Pressing Onward, which Pitchfork described as “a vibrant and unabashedly queer take on worship music.”

This summer, Freedia will also hit the road for the BIG FREEDOM tour. According to the announcement, $1 from every ticket sold for headline shows will support the Center for Working Families Fund. BIG FREEDOM tour dates
