One of the most iconic LGBTQ couples in sports is no more after a decade together. Sue Bird and Megan Rapinoe announced in a joint Instagram post that they have decided to separate after a decade together and an engagement that began in 2020.

“This hasn’t been an easy decision, but it’s one we’ve made together, with so much love, respect and care for each other,” the post said. “We’ve shared a whole life over the last decade, through big moments and in quiet ones, and that is something we’ll always carry with us.”

When the couple first got together in 2016, they represented the pinnacle of women’s sports. To have two of the very best athletes in the world dating each other gave hope and courage to LGBTQ youth all around the globe that they, too, could play at the highest level and love who they want to love.

Bird is a four-time WNBA champion for the Seattle Storm, the only WNBA franchise she played for across a 20-year professional career in the league. She was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame last year.

Rapinoe was one of the best American soccer players in the world throughout her time on the national team. She was named the best FIFA women’s player in 2019, a year in which she helped the United States to a second consecutive World Cup victory.

Washington Mystics rookie Lauren Betts said earlier this week that Bird and Rapinoe were her favorite power couple. They had a tremendous influence on women’s sports and, despite their separation, they will continue to represent the best of queer athletics.
