Mexico fans again chant anti-gay slur in the U.S., storm the field during a match

Mexico fans yet again chanted the anti-gay slur “puto” en masse at a soccer match, and again in the United States. The El Tri fans were apparently embarrassed by the score — ending with a 4-0 loss to Uruguay — and so decided to disrupt the match with the chant.

This time it was a friendly match on Wednesday against Uruguay, held at Empower Field at Mile High in Denver. Mexico fans did the same thing previously in a match against Costa Rica at the same stadium in 2021. Mexico fans also chanted the gay slur en masse a few days earlier in Chicago, again against Costa Rica.

By all accounts, on Wednesday officials temporarily suspended the match against Uruguay, then let the match continue. Until a handful of Mexico fans on Wednesday also stormed the field, leading to the suspension of the match.

It’s another embarrassing outing by Mexico fans, who continue to give a big middle finger to FIFA, CONCACAF, US Soccer and the LGBTQ community. While US Soccer waves a rainbow flag for Pride, the organization continues to allow Mexico to play in the United States, against its own policy.

Mexico should be banned from playing in the United States, but US Soccer simply won’t ban them because these matches make way too much money.

And the fans will continue to chant gay slurs en masse, subjecting other LGBTQ fans and supporters to the discrimination.

Given US Soccer’s own policy guaranteeing every fan the “right right to a safe, respectful, and enjoyable experience,” any fan at the match in Denver can file a complaint.
