Hard Pivot: All the allies who’ve disappointed us this year–from Debra Messing to Snoop Dogg to Kristin Chenoweth

We lost a lot of people to the fart mind virus this year

2025 hasn’t been anyone’s idea of a picnic, and it’s not exactly shocking to see so many people lose their marbles. But some celebrities—many of whom could once proudly claim the title of LGBTQ+ ally—have lost more marbles than others, and they haven’t been quiet about it.

It’s disappointing to see once-beloved celebrities seemingly walk back their support, but in this community, we’re all about moving forward and leaving the past in the past. To that end, let’s say goodbye to the allies we’ve lost, the minds that have cracked under the strain of a truly insane-making year, and some other randos who really have no excuses…

Debra Messing

Debra Messing’s reaction to Zohran Mamdani’s mayoral win was the crashout heard ’round the world. Or at least around Instagram, where she posted almost 100 misleading and Islamophobic memes to her Instagram stories in 24 hours. Once a beloved figure who promoted tolerance and LGBTQ+ acceptance in a pre-marriage equality landscape, somewhere along the line, Debra seems to have gotten mixed around to the point where she actually started sharing That Man’s truth social posts. Huh?! Debra, if you’re reading, we’d still love to hear from you about this.

Sydney Sweeney

Sydney Sweeney was once a favorite of the gays in shows like Euphoria and Everything Sucks! (where she played a lesbian—convincingly!). But after her controversial American Eagle jeans commercial (you know the one), followed by reports that she was a registered Republican in Tr*mp’s home state of Florida of all places, she quickly fell out of favor, leading the gays to wager a woke jeans war of our own. When asked about it later, she refused to so much as address the controversy. “I think that when I have an issue that I want to speak about, people will hear,” was all she had to say about the matter.

Nicki Minaj

There was a time when men were kind… and there was also a time when Nicki Minaj was a favorite of the gays. Sadly, that time appears to be over, because not only did Nicki—now dubbed “MAGA Minaj” by disappointed ex-fans—recently repost one of That Man’s truth social posts about disappearing Christianity in Nigeria, she now appears firmly in cahoots with the right wingnuts in office. It’s sad to see a gay icon die, but let’s be honest—Barb City has been a toxic destination for some time now.

Snoop Dogg

@pridebrary

When watching Lightyear, Snoop had a clash with the LGBTQ Comimunity. But here’s my wlw confession: The new buzz lightyear movie isn’t something to get up in arms about. Snoop Dogg is another in a long chain of homophobia. So those one the Snoop Dogg Ark fandom and the Snoop Dogg cooking hashtag, lets see how this beloved rapper’s reaction to LGBTQ Representation affects the community and the future. #snoopdogg #lgbtq #disney #buzzlightyear #representationmatters ♬ original sound – The PrideBrarian

This one really hurt. In September, once-beloved rapper Snoop Dogg told interviewers that he was “scared” to watch the Disney film Lightyear with his grandson because it features a same-sex kiss. Snoop was summarily dragged by community icon Ts Madison and others for his poor take, leading everyone to wonder: if Snoop has been a closet homophobe all along, what was up with that cameo on The L Word all those years back? To make matters even more confusing, Snoop backtracked just a month later, partnering with GLAAD this Spirit Day to promote an LGBTQ+-inclusive episode of his kids’ show “Doggyland,” featuring the vocal talents of The Voice host Jeremy Beloate. It was nice to see Snoop reverse course, but it also gave us whiplash–a case of too little, too late, and not quite gay enough.

Betty Who

Oh girl, this opinion should have stayed in drafts. When Aussie singer—and noted ally—Betty Who talked to the women of “Made It Out” podcast, certain of her comments rubbed queer people the wrong way. After discussing her relationship with her own bisexuality and talking about feeling judged for dating a man, Who brought Renee Rapp into the conversation… which was a mistake.

“As much as it’s funny that Reneé Rapp is like, ‘You’ll never catch me dating a man,” Who stated, “It’s like, ‘Go off, queen! I love that for you.’ But I also hold space for her in 10 years if she goes, ‘Oops, I met the love of my life and it’s this man, I didn’t mean to.’ It’s like, that’s okay!”

After a flurry of backlash to the comment, which felt like it misguidedly reinforced myths about lesbian identity as temporary or a phase, Who did end up apologizing for her words, but some folks were still not satisfied. Not long after, Rapp told Who to kindly keep her “big lesbian name” out of her mouth, and yes, message received queen!

Kristin Chenoweth

WHICH PERSPECTIVES KRISTIN??? ♬ original sound – Don Martin

Another Broadway diva bit the dust earlier this year—pre-Debra Messing crashout—when Charlie Kirk’s death revealed to us exactly who our friends were, and who they weren’t. Kristin Chenoweth may have been the original Glinda in Wicked, and she may have stood up for us back in the dark days of “It Gets Better” but when she said she “appreciated” some of Kirk’s perspectives, it raised eyebrows. People wanted to know which of Kirk’s perspectives she agreed with. The one calling the stoning of gay people “God’s perfect law” perhaps? Or was it the one where he said he wouldn’t trust a Black woman in the role of a doctor or airplane pilot? Chenoweth never clarified and, as a result, many queer fans decided they needed to keep their distance. “It was tough on me,” Chenoweth said of the scandal in a recent non-apology interview, “but I’m not going to answer any questions about it because I dealt with it… You probably know my heart, so you probably know.” At this point, Kristin, we’re not sure we do know your heart.

Jeffree Star

Makeup mogul Jeffree Star may be one of us, but he’s been quite suss for a while. After making a career out of cosplaying as a nonbinary person, Star finally came clean this year, stating things like “LGB is separate from the T” and basically distancing himself from the trans community during our darkest political moment. By fanning the flames of anti-trans hatred, Star turned his back on the community that bought his makeup and supported his YouTube for years. But one thing about the trans community? If you turn on us, we will waste no time turning right around on you, sister.

Carrie Underwood

Years ago, country singer Carrie Underwood was a gay favorite, if only for how much we loved to sing “Before He Cheats” at karaoke. But when Underwood started out the year by performing at That Man’s inauguration, we had to delete her from our Spotify history. Responding to the backlash surrounding Underwood’s choice, the singer stated: “I love our country and am honored to have been asked to sing at the Inauguration and to be a small part of this historic event. I am humbled to answer the call at a time when we must all come together in the spirit of unity and looking to the future.” Unfortunately, that “spirit of unity” clearly didn’t include the many trans and queer citizens who Tr*mp demonized during his campaign and who would later go on to suffer during his second term. Country may be having a renaissance thanks to Beyoncé and Sabrina Carpenter, but that doesn’t mean we need to take all our past favs from the country-verse into 2026. And as for Miss Carrie? We’re leaving her back in 2008, where she belongs.
