Jackie Young — despite being the player her teammates don’t want their kid to date — led the way as the Aces took down the Mercury 91-78 in Sunday’s Game 2, putting the Vegas squad two wins away from winning their third WNBA title in four years.

With Usher sitting courtside, only a few years after A’ja Wilson demanded to see him after the Aces won their first title, there was a level of experience exhibited by the team that the Mercury could not replicate. This is the Aces’ third Finals appearance in four years, and coach Becky Hammon’s seventh Finals appearance as a player and coach.

After a nail-biting Game 1 in which the Aces fought back to win by three points, there was much less drama in Game 2. Young led the Aces with 32-points, including a 21-point third quarter, the most by a WNBA player in a quarter in Finals history. “Power straight” Wilson was right there with Young, as the reigning MVP picked up 14 rebounds in the game and dropped 20 points in the first half. Wilson and Young would go on to combine for the second-most points in Finals history, as the duo combined on 60 of the team’s 91 points.

The Mercury gave it their all, but from the 5:33 mark of the second quarter on, the Aces never trailed.

The Mercury are not out by any means as the series now shifts to Phoenix for Games 3 and 4. Phoenix is boasting a roster of legends, including fiancées Alyssa Thomas and DeWanna Bonner, but the team has not played together as a unit until this season. Bonner herself wasn’t added until midseason and the Mercury have just two players on this year’s roster who were with the team in 2024. The franchise became the first to make it to two Finals in a five-year span with different teams.

Two different teams built in two different ways — one over many years (the Aces drafted Wilson in 2018), and one over just a few months. Both are in the Finals, both have future Hall of Famers on their squads, and both are giving all they’ve got to secure a trophy.
