These 2 fiancées are teaming up for their big Game 3 against New York

Alyssa Thomas, aka The Engine, reminded us why she got that nickname in last night’s must-win Phoenix Mercury victory over the scorching New York Liberty.

Recently teamed up again with her fiancée, DeWanna Bonner, Thomas and the Mercury are hoping to make it to the second round of the WNBA Playoffs in a deciding Game 3 this Friday night.

After a heartbreaking loss in Game 1 against the Liberty, punctuated by a Thomas missed layup that would have given the Mercury a win, there was no going back in Game 2.

“Just an unfortunate roll,” Thomas said of her Game 1 missed layup. “I’ve made that shot thousands of times. For me, it’s no big deal.”

This WNBA scoring love triangle is perfectly WNBA
DeWanna Bonner moved up a spot on the all-time WNBA scoring list, leaving her ex in the dust and her fiancee beaming.

Thomas, ever the cool and collected veteran of the W, does not let one shot get her down. Thomas has played 12 seasons in the league, and has faced many setbacks in her storied career. Almost 10 years ago Thomas injured her right shoulder, which would be the first of her two torn labra she opted to not receive surgery to treat. Instead, Thomas adapted her shot to the unique style we see today.

Two torn labra weren’t going to stop Thomas, why would one measly layup?

In this first round best-of-three series, the Mercury did not have any wiggle room come Game 2. They didn’t have to worry about any comeback from the Liberty at Barclays Arena last night; the team was shellacked, 86-60, in front of their home crowd.

What better way to respond to a tough Game 1 loss than seeing Liberty faithful leave the arena with 5 minutes left in the fourth quarter?

Thomas led the charge last night, tying teammate Satou Sabally with team-leading 15 points each. Thomas’ teammate and fiancée, Dewanna Bonner, put up 14 points herself. Bonner is back on the Mercury after she time spent with Indiana earlier this season, before she was waived by the team due to compatibility issues.

Now the couple is reunited (they also played together in Connecticut for years), and there seems to be a different energy with this Mercury team than the previous Sun squads the couple were on. Perhaps it is having fellow stars like Sabally and Kahleah Copper in tow, or their team’s own dedicated practice facility, but regardless, Thomas and the Mercury are having themselves an incredible season.

Bonner has won a title with Phoenix, the team that originally drafted her in 2009 as the No. 5 pick out of Auburn. Bonner played her first 10 seasons in Phoenix, before playing the last five in Connecticut (and started this season on the Fever). Bonner’s fiancée, however, has yet to win a title of her own.

With the Mercury in another win-or-go-home position on Friday, it’ll be up to them to decide their fate. This time they will be back on their home court, the same place where Thomas missed that game-winning layup only days prior.

Whichever team wins this deciding first round game, they will go on to face the Minnesota Lynx in a best-of-five second round that would start this Sunday. Buckle up, fans, these next few weeks of WNBA playoffs are about to get wild.
