‘Tis the HoliGays Season: Here are all the awesome experiences to enjoy in San Francisco
All the places where San Francisco makes the season merry and bright.

San Francisco loves a good excuse to dress up, and the Christmas holiday is a fabulous one.
From Castro Street to South of Market, find all the places where San Francisco makes the season merry and bright with the GayCities HoliGays guide.
Setting the HoliGay table
San Francisco starts the season early with the Castro District’s Holiday Tree Lighting Ceremony on Monday, November 30, steps from the historic gayborhood’s enormous Pride flag.
Earlier that evening, John Waters brings his annual and always sacrilegious A John Waters Christmas show to the Great American Music Hall. With luck, the Pope of Trash will be on hand to help flip the switch. Someone send a Waymo.

After the ceremony, drink up more holiday spirit at the Deck the Halls Pop-up Bar at Parasol at Cafe Flore, across Market Street in the Castro. Find a blizzard of Christmas decor at the longtime gayborhood gathering spot and custom cocktails like the Resting Grinch Face, Nut Nog, and Feliz NaviDaddy.
You won’t be the only thing lit this yuletide season as Let’s Glow SF joins the ongoing Illuminate SF Festival of Light to bathe the city and its landmarks in holiday colors and light-art projections through December.
Find the best views from the city’s highest hotel rooms, including the towering Four Seasons Embarcadero (the hotel occupies the top 11 floors), along with the historic Fairmont and InterContinental Mark Hopkins perched atop Nob Hill.
December 1-5: Your gay crush

The first week in December is packed with holiday cheer, and a crush of overlapping gay entertainment options along your itinerary.
On Tuesday, look back at 2026 with gay social commentator and comedian Dominick Pupa at his annual holiday retrospective, “Dom We Now Our Gay Apparel”, at OASIS in SoMa. Wednesday welcomes LGBTQ+ favorites Pink Martini for their eclectic take on pop, Latin, classical, and jazz, in concert with the San Francisco Symphony at Davies Hall.
On Thursday, strap on your skates and other Christmas accessories for the yearly Drag on Ice Night at the Safeway Holiday Ice Rink at Union Square, where you join the free skate with drag queens who take to the ice.
Warm up with a walk a few blocks south to the always-packed Downtown First Thursdays street party, wrapped in red, white, and green trimmings for December. Or Uber it to Golden Gate Park to find fellow creatures of the night at the California Academy of Sciences’ NightLife party. This year’s holiday theme: Naughty or Nice. (Santa’s looking at you, naughty penguin.)
The same evening kicks off three nights of art walks in gayborhoods across the city, starting with the Tenderloin on Thursday, the Castro on Friday, and the Mission on Saturday. But Friday night will test gay loyalties from the Civic Center to Union Square.
At the Curran Theatre, “Golden Girls Live: The Christmas Episodes” opens Friday night for a two-week run — because, “Ma!”, they only get more popular with age.
A few blocks away at the Golden Gate Theatre, the San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus opens a multi-night run of its “Christmas Show Holiday Spectacular.”
And up the street, the War Memorial Opera House and Davies Symphony Hall open holiday favorites The Nutcracker and Handel’s Messiah on the same night.
Avoid the gridlock and walk to them all from the Timbri Hotel on Market Street, a handsome, Modernist flatiron building.
Favorite Aunt Charlie’s Lounge, a dime-sized drag bar almost always decorated for Christmas, is right around the corner.
Pull yourself together on Saturday with a walk through Golden Gate Park and its holiday attractions.
Start at the DeYoung Museum’s Holiday Artisan Fair — while you’re at it, mingle with handsome gilded boy kings at the blockbuster Treasures of the Pharaohs exhibition — then browse the Sunset Holiday Mercantile market at the San Francisco County Fair Building.
Finish after sunset with a magical stroll through Lightscape: the San Francisco Botanical Garden Holiday Lights display.
After a disco nap, claim your prize at Trophy Dad Prime at Club Six in SoMa, another Naughty or Nice-themed holiday party and one of several circuit-style events during EXtreme Xmas Weekend at venues including the historic Mint and Halcyon Club in SoMa.
December 6-13: Santas swarming
Local aristocrat and drag queen Lady Camden debuts her holiday show Naughty Nutcracker… Wanted!! on Thursday at Oasis in SoMa. The same night, A Drag Queen Christmas plays a one-night stand at the Golden Gate Theatre in Mid-Market, with host Nina West plus performances by Myki Meeks, Nini Coco, Darlene Mitchell, Juicy Love Dion, Discord Addams, Crystal Methyd, and Silky Ganache. That makes eight spanked reindeer for this drag-themed Christmas slay.
Night markets are big in San Francisco, and the city hosts four holidaze-themed versions on Friday: in the Fillmore District, the Inner Sunset, at Fort Mason, and in the Excelsior District.
Few places in San Francisco stir the Christmas spirit like Grace Cathedral, the architecturally spectacular and culturally inclusive Episcopal church atop Nob Hill. Soak in their version of Handel’s Messiah with the American Bach Soloists and choir on Thursday and Friday, followed by the quintessentially San Francisco Cathedral Christmas show on Saturday.
A church may be the best refuge that day, as the Official Santa Con San Francisco Pub Crawl takes over the city on Saturday. That night, weave through the red-suited mayhem to the Marina District for the St. Francis Yacht Club’s Lighted Boat Parade. Pick up a wee tree for a good cause just down the Marina Green at the Guardsmen Christmas Tree Lot at Fort Mason, a charitable San Francisco tradition benefiting Bay Area youth.
Another longtime San Francisco ritual is Christmas at the Stud, the city’s longest-running gay bar, on Folsom Street in SoMa. Feel the yuletide heat on Saturday night with STEAM: Holiday Edition. They’re serious about staying on theme: “Towels available for purchase at the door (while supplies last).” What happens next is up to you.

With your pores and other anatomy refreshed, wake up Sunday for another San Francisco tradition: Santa’s Skivvies Run in the Castro District, a ragtag, skin-baring jog benefiting the San Francisco AIDS Foundation. While you’re there, stop by the Harvey Milk Center for the Arts on Duboce Triangle for its annual Holiday Craft Fair, benefiting local artisans and the center. If you’re still feeling charitable, open your wallet for the 2nd Annual Xmas Gay-la, a benefit for Theatre Rhinoceros, the country’s longest-running queer theatre company, at The Academy.
All that charitable giving plus presents and eggnog have you strapped? Save on lodging at places like the Pod Room, with zeitgeisty accommodations en petit, downtown off Union Square, or at one of the city’s hostels, popular with the kids carrying backpacks and wanderlust. Two are the Pacific Tradewinds Backpacker Hostel and the self-described “fun” (read “party”) Green Tortoise Hostel; both are in Chinatown. A third might be the best: Hostelling International’s Fort Mason outpost, with a view from your bunk bed overlooking Aquatic Park and San Francisco Bay.
December 14-19: A procession of stars

San Francisco’s hometown orchestra goes gay with two shows this week at Davies Symphony Hall. Bernadette Peters is on stage Tuesday night with a holiday version of her show celebrating the Great American Songbook and all things Stephen Sondheim. On Thursday, San Francisco drag legend Peaches Christ leads a star-studded lineup in holiday song at the SF Symphony’s Holiday Gaiety concert, featuring fellow drag artists Creatine Price, Katya Smirnoff-Skyy, and Sister Roma, backed by the busy San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus.
Between those dates comes the kickoff of the Mission District’s Las Posadas, the candlelit Latin American commemoration of Mary and Joseph’s nine-day journey from Nazareth to Bethlehem, ending at the manger on Christmas Eve. This one stops at a different restaurant every night, serving tamales y ponche, chiles en nogada, and holiday sangria.
December 20-25: Good Christmas morning

Christmas week opens on Sunday at the historic Castro Theatre with pageant queen and Drag Race legend Alyssa Edwards in A Very Alyssa Christmas, which promises a “spectacular holiday ride through the life and times” of the “global drag superstar,” a title she earned winning RuPaul’s Drag Race: Global All Stars in 2024. Upgrade your way backstage with an Ultimate VIP Diamond Level Package, including all the selfies and lipstick stains.
On Christmas Eve, break bread at one or both of these hallowed San Francisco institutions: the storied House of Prime Rib in Polk Gulch, where the Queen’s Cut has been earning winks and nods from patrons and staff since 1949, or Kung Pao Kosher Comedy: Jewish Comedy On Christmas In A Chinese Restaurant at the Imperial Palace Restaurant in Chinatown, for laughs at the gentiles’ expense, finally!
Few things are cozier than waking up snuggled in a luxe hotel bed on Christmas morning. For the ultimate version, check into the historic Westin St. Francis on Union Square, with views of the 10-story holiday tree outside, fluffy terrycloth robes, and the hotel’s trademark Heavenly bed. Ask for a corner standard in the ornate original building.
If you’ve opened your presents and can’t wait to get out of bed, join other women and nonbinary riders for a Christmas Day Bike Ride, pedaling off at 7:15 a.m. (!) from McLaren Lodge at the entrance to Golden Gate Park on Stanyan Street. For Christmas masses, Grace Cathedral, Saints Peter and Paul Church on Washington Square in North Beach, and the Modernist St. Mary’s Cathedral on Cathedral Hill each promise big-time Christmas pageantry.
