After months of promotion in the run-up to its release, Madonna’s 15th studio album, Confessions II, has debuted in the number one spot in many countries around the world. This includes topping the Billboard album chart, where it became her tenth chart-topping album.

This makes her the first artist to score a number-one Billboard album in the 2020s and in three other decades.

Another record for Madonna!

Confessions II opened with 134,000 units overall in the US, with 114,000 coming from traditional sales, combined with 20.1 million first-week streams of the album’s 16 tracks.

In the UK, Confessions II became Madonna’s 13th chart-topper. Her first number one in the country since 2012’s MDNA, it stretches her run of number one albums there across an astonishing five decades.

The album has also hit number one in Australia, France, Portugal, Italy, Spain, Belgium and Switzerland, among other countries.

Unique promotional events

Confessions II was a follow-up to her original Confessions On A Dancefloor album from 2005. It saw her again team up with British producer and songwriter Stuart Price.

In recent weeks, she and Price heavily promoted the album at a number of pop-up events, including parties at The Abbey in West Hollywood, a concert in New York’s Times Square that Grindr live-streamed to its users, and a launch party in London. She also produced a short film, set to five of the album’s tracks, which debuted at the Tribeca Film Festival last month.

Yesterday, Madonna took to Instagram to express her joy at the album’s success.

“Words cannot express how Grateful and Surprised I am by the incredible reception, Confessions on a Dance Floor has received!!” she said. “Thank You -to everyone who has been a part of this and who has helped make this dream come true. Especially my Fans. The Goodwill and positivity has been incredible. I’m still pinching myself. I can’t believe it’s # 1 all around the world. ???????? ????.”

My dream was to make people dance this summer!!” she continued. “To bring people JOY! Dreams do come true. Thanks and love! ♥????

Among those to react to Madonna’s post was Andy Cohen, who said, “You did it. AGAIN! Keep going! We need you now more than ever! Queen of Queens, and Queen of the Queens.”

Rosie O’Donnell simply posted a love heart and flame emojis.

Although it’s hit the top spot, Madonna is not taking her foot off the promotion pedal just yet. She’s set to appear at the FIFA World Cup final’s first half-time show this Sunday (July 19), where she’ll perform alongside Justin Bieber, BTS and Shakira.
