October 20th marks the return of Las Angeles cabaret legend Steamy Chanteuse.

In the vein of characters such as Elvira and LA’s billboard queen Angelyne (Steamy even has her own billboard in Hollywood across from the iconic Palladium Venue).

This cabaret legend is the epitome of glamour and the if you know you know presence. She marks her return to the LA cabaret scene after a bit of a hiatus with an intimate performance at the Voda Spa in West Hollywood on October 20th honoring the amazing performers that came before Steamy.

A bathhouse you say?

Yes, a bathhouse.

Cabaret stars have long held their shows in interesting venues due to the high costs of renting an official theatre space and for the added allure. For instance the super star Bette Middle launched her cabaret and singing career (before becoming a star of stage and screen) at The Continental Baths formally in the basement of the Ansonia Hotel in NYC around 1970. As if gays need another reason to go “relax” at the baths, Steamy said “Lets really commit and give them a show”. As this is a show tributing the legends of cabaret, it seemed the truest way to make a splash. Steamy found a moment from rehearsals to sit down with GayCities to talk all things her and her upcoming show.

GC: Miss Steamy Chanteuse welcome back! What have you been doing in the time away?
STEAMY: The real question is, what haven’t I been doing? I’ve been all over the world, bringing glamour to those less fortunate. I’ve been perfecting my already practically perfect craft. I’ve been reminiscing on the triumphs of my incredible career, and preparing something for my return that will take my fans and I somewhere we’ve never been before, together. THE BATHHOUSE!

GC: Love that! Why the bathhouse? Coughs. Perfect Bette Midler plug here lol.
STEAMY: Well many people don’t know this, but I actually gave Bette the idea to perform at The Continental Baths back in our days in the New York scene. She just had the right publicist.
Also, acoustics…

GC: Bathroom tiles do ultimately provide THE best acoustics. Especially in the shower before a night out. What’s your pre-show ritual?
STEAMY: Oh darling a Diva never tells her secrets but I’ll spill just this once. I love a filthy martini before the show. Three olives. Shaken. NEVER stirred. God forbid. Then I do twenty minutes of vocal exercises and ten minutes of something I can’t discuss in print.

GC: Your upcoming show in West Hollywood is a tribute to some of your favorite divas. Which DIVA’s of the past are we tributing?
STEAMY:You know, it’s hard to pay tribute to your contemporaries, some might say, your rivals. However, I’m extremely evolved. I don’t have a jealous bone in my body, and therefore I’m perfectly happy to tip my hat to the women who came up alongside me. I don’t have to name names though–they’ve had enough publicity.

RSVP to join Steamy Chanteuse on October 20th at 7pm at Voda spa in West Hollywood. You’ll be in for a night of equal parts concert and immersive happening in a world where steam, beauty and nostalgia collide.
