The Fabric of Freedom: Why WorldPride DC 2025 will be a can’t-miss global event
WorldPride DC 2025 anticipates over 3 million attendees from around the globe.

Get ready for a momentous celebration of unity, diversity, and love—Washington, DC, will be the epicenter of LGBTQ+ pride from May 17 to June 8 as it hosts WorldPride 2025. This landmark event coincides with the 50th anniversary of Pride in the nation’s capital, adding even greater significance to the celebration. Under the theme “The Fabric of Freedom,” WorldPride 2025 will spotlight diverse voices and stories, weaving them into a powerful narrative of visibility, action, and community.
Created by InterPride, a global network of over 375 Pride organizations from 70+ countries, WorldPride aims to promote visibility and awareness of global LGBTQ+ issues. Rome hosted the first WorldPride in 2000, and Washington, DC, will be the tenth city to host.

The tone and importance of WorldPride 2025 have taken on a new urgency in the wake of the divisive US election that gave the GOP the upper hand in all three branches of government. For many members of the LGBTQ+ community in the US, this outcome marks a dramatic shift, with heightened fears about the potential rollback of hard-won rights and protections.
Ryan Bos, Executive Director of the Capital Pride Alliance, organizing WorldPride 2025, stresses that the event is more than a symbolic moment.
“We believe that WorldPride has a vital role to play in bringing together people from different countries and backgrounds to speak out in favor of those who seek justice, equity, peace, and freedom,” says Bos.
To support Bos’ vision of WorldPride 2025, he and the team at Capital Pride Alliance have planned a slate of celebratory events, political activations, and cultural programs. Here are some of the highlights:
DC Black Pride
The festivities kick off May 23-26 with DC Black Pride, which was founded in 1991 and has grown over the decades. More than 300,000 attendees are expected this year, produced again by the Center for Black Equity.
Welcome Concert featuring Shakira

Kicking off WorldPride’s extensive schedule will be a breathtaking opening ceremony and concert headlined by international superstar Shakira on Saturday, May 31. The Colombian singer-songwriter has been an outspoken supporter of LGBTQ+ rights, writing on her Facebook page last year: “Forever supporting equality, freedom to love and friendship.” Expect the energy to soar as she lights up DC with her iconic voice and electrifying stage presence—a party you won’t want to miss. Ticket information is available here.
International WorldPride Human Rights Conference
The International WorldPride Human Rights Conference, taking place Wednesday, June 4, through Friday, June 6, will unite global activists, scholars, and community leaders to tackle the most pressing issues facing the LGBTQ+ community today. This event ensures progress marches alongside the festivities by centering marginalized voices and strategizing for actionable solutions. Tickets are available for on-site and virtual attendance.
WorldPride Music Festival: Global Dance Party

Happening Friday, June 6, and Saturday, June 7, the WorldPride Music Festival: Global Dance Party will feature incredible performers and cutting-edge art. There will be three stages showcasing various genres, including house, pop, drag, and techno. Tickets are on sale for the festival, which will be held at the RFK Festival Grounds.
WorldPride Parade
The annual Capital Pride Parade will be replaced by an expansive WorldPride Parade, presented by Love Travels by Marriott Bonvoy, on Saturday, June 7. The parade will span nearly 20 blocks and include dozens of decorative floats, celebrities, politicians, bands, and marching contingents.
WorldPride Street Festival

The free WorldPride Street Festival will be held over two days, Saturday, June 7, and Sunday, June 8, along the city’s famed Pennsylvania Avenue and insight of the US Capitol. The festival will feature hundreds of vibrant exhibitors, skilled artisans, delicious food, and beverage gardens. The celebrations will come alive with multiple stages, showcasing an array of multicultural and multilingual performances.
International March on Washington & Rally
Thousands of WorldPride attendees and others will follow in the footsteps of Martin Luther King, Jr. and other champions of human rights who have marched for freedom and equality during the International March on Washington & Rally. On Sunday, June 8, the march will make its way through the city and culminate with a rally at the US Capitol and feature renowned LGBTQ+ activists and leaders from around the world.
Enhanced security

Following last year’s FBI and Department of Homeland Security warning that foreign terror organizations might attempt to target Pride events around the world, and the more recent New Year’s Day tragedy in New Orleans, the safety of WorldPride 2025 participants is a concern for many.
The Capital Pride Alliance is fortunate to have longstanding partnerships with many federal and local agencies assisting with security planning for the event.
“Our event layouts, medical assets, safety protocols, and emergency plans are developed in close collaboration between our Health and Safety Committee and agencies such as Homeland Security, Capitol Police, DC Fire-EMS, National Park Police, Metropolitan Police, the Department of Transportation, and others,” says Sahand Miraminy, Director of Operations for the Capital Pride Alliance.
Tactics such as impact suppression vehicles, anti-scaling barriers, and adequate road closures that extend far beyond heavy pedestrian areas will be used for the various WorldPride 2025 events.
Travel tips for WorldPride
Three to five million people are expected to attend WorldPride 2025 throughout the celebration. Many events will sell out, and booking options for transportation, hotels, and restaurants will likely become more limited as the event draws near. As such, it is recommended that those attending make their plans for WorldPride 2025 as early as possible.
Washington, DC, is served by three airports: Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA), Dulles International Airport (IAD), and Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI), providing attendees with many flight options and price comparisons. Amtrak also services the city with a centrally located station.
For hotel options, Washington, DC’s tourism office launched a special booking site with a wide selection of hotels and promises guaranteed lowest rates for WorldPride 2025 attendees.
